I just bought a set of 20.0/8.0-14 slicks for the challenge. The manufacturer recomends 6" wide rims. I currently have 5.5" wide rims that would count as $0 toward my budget since they came with the car.
The manufacturer's website states:
Acceptable practice for rim width plus or minus 1''.
IMPORTANT: ALL DRAG DRIVE TIRES MUST BE MATCHED TO BE WITHIN 1/2'' ROLL OUT..
Does this mean the tires can be mounted on 5-7" wide rims?
My experience with tires is that any tire mounted on a narrower rim will tend to curve up at the edges. You may get a smaller contact patch with the narrower wheel. Not ideal but it should work, you may have to run a slightly lower tire pressure to get the full contact patch. Since it's a drag tire you don't have to worry about the tire rolling over in a turn. Most drag tires like lower pressures anyway.

No it says "roll out" that mean you mount both the tires and inflate to say 10psi now check the circumfrance (sp?) of the tires. Wrap thin tape measure around the diameter of the tire the tire must be with in 1/2 or you'll lunch in to the wall or the other lane. Just like stagger in roundy round cars.
If you run on narrow rims you'll likley give up contact patch but only way to know is paint the surface and do quick pop of speed and check the tire.

What did you see that made you change your mind?

Uhmm... he didn't change his mind. He first corrected your definition of rollout and then gave you a heads up as to the effect of the diameter variance.
