You expect speed from molasses?

Read about this method on vintage bike forums but went with oxilac acid bath instead. It was faster .

Update for everyone!!!

I have lost about 5 mm of fluid to evaporation. 

And there is some mold starting to form on the surface.

Just thought I'd keep you all in the loop of excitement.

I'm assuming the tank doesn't contain pure molasses. How dilute is it?

You know when you get done you could probably distill (pay your taxes to make it legal) the remains for some holiday cheer.

Never mind your in Chicago. I doubt it's been warm enough to ferment. Maybe next time make sure it stays warm.

No exact measurements, I put about 3 tbsp molasses into a 12 fl oz cup and filled it mostly to the top with warm water.

Oxalic acid does work well too.  GM used to sell it packaged as a Block / Rad cleaner.  Can be hard to find in todays world....Look in the Deck Bleach section of the hardware stores

If you can't find Oxalic acid, spinach contains it.

Just immerse your parts in a big vat of chopped spinach.

Trivia: A salt/vinegar bath creates hydrogen chloride (HCl, aka hydrochloric, aka Muriatic) locally around rust, which is the actual derusting mechanism.

I have derusted parts in seconds with Muriatic.  Externally and internally.  (How else do you clean out a rusty fuel rail?)  It's also great for melting bearing material off of a crankshaft after a sieze.  The time it takes to get rid of all of the aluminum/babbitt/whatever is not enough time to hurt the iron.

I've had the best luck with muriatic acid as well. Buddy of mine was messing around with electrolysis for a while when we were in college and he had very good success with that as well. Im very curious to see how well the molasis works, but don't think I have the patience to try this myself.

You can adjust the image size in the editor on the forum. I changed the width to 50 for the above.
