I've been really pouring over all the 1uz info regarding mating a 5 speed to it.

I have a machinist friend who can make me the bellhousing adapter, that part is not an issue. The issue is the flywheel. Custom ones from online vendors make the swap not a budget swap anymore.

I don't know what skill is required to make a flywheel or modify a flywheel... but supposedly you can slot the holes on a 3sgte flywheel or enlarge the center bore and holes and weld on a 1uz ring gear on a 3vz flywheel.

Anyway, most of the guys on the 1uz forums believe that modifying flywheels is the devil and the flywheel will definitely explode and take your legs off.

So... assuming all the work is done on a mill with a rotary table and gets balance afterwards... is an SFI scatter shield and/or a good orthopedic surgeon going to be the best course of action?

kinda depends.....

If the flywheel you got is obivously built with extra weight for low speed launch of a heavy vehicle....should be pretty easy to trim some weight. (I'm thinking of an old 215 Buick flywheels with a large "rim" outside the pressure plate that adds only weight.)

If the flywheel is already thin, with no obvious extra weight.... be VERY careful.

Do a crack test before and after machining as well as balance.

Modify, magnaflux, and run a ballistic blanket.

As stated above, don't make it overly thin in high stress areas.

No thinning involved. Redrilling the bolt holes is all. Here's a photo showing the work

The ring that goes between the bolts and the flexplate is then used to spread out the bolting pressure.

Feel free to dump any and all related links, I've been thinking a lot lately about putting a 1uz in my ma67 supra.

As long as the center bore fits the crank properly and you can tighten all the bolts I don't see a problem.

simplecat: definitely check this out. some guy on lextreme just verbally crapped huge amounts of flywheel info in this thread
