A friend let me autocross his Mini last year and I found them. Radio came on full blast!

I like the looks of the first gen ones. You don't see too many of them around here anymore. I'd DD one with a stick and the V6 all day!

We had an early last-gen one as a rental years ago when SWMBO's old 2007 Elantra was laid up from an accident. That car had the 2.4 in it. It was one of the most underpowered, uncomfortable, awkwardly designed cars I have ever had the displeasure to ride in or drive. It was impossible to get comfortable in the seats, and the Elantra somehow had more room inside despite being about two feet shorter. Also, the engine sounded like it was lubricated with marbles instead of oil. I hated her Elantra for various reasons, and couldn't believe I was longing for it to be fixed.

All that said, the Pentastar powered ones look like a decent deal. They are dirt cheap, and a few of the guys on a Turbo Mopar forum I'm on have them and love them. They fixed the interior awkwardness and I guess they run something like 14.0 in the quarter.

A rental that runs 14s! You could even go for the 200 for extra sleeper appeal.

It's not a looker or speed machine, but it eats the miles. The Hyundai Sonata is also in this category, but the rental Avengers had a better radio from an ease of setup perspective. I'd never buy one though.

This guy. Gets it lol

Love them all you want. Hell, buy them all up and store them on your property. Mind if we fence you in? Don't worry, with all of those steering wheel-mounted buttons, you won't even notice.

They're one of the most awful E36 M3 boxes Chrysler makes. Tied with every single other vehicle they make.

The interior holds up the worst of nearly all makes, loose and broken crap, stuff stops working, buttons stick. I see all makes of used cars through work and these are by far some of the worst. The engines are all terrible save for the Pentastar, but give it time and some common spectacular failure will make itself known in 2-3 more years.

Oh wait. Already happening.

I besides the apparently undimmable dash lights, my other take away was that it was like the springs and shocks were replaced by marshmallows. That is the best way to describe the feeling of driving a new avenger. It corners like it is on marshmallows.

Tanks :)

I used to rent a lot of cars in my past job. The worst? Toyota Matrix and the VW "city" golf MY 06 or 07. The golf was like a chevette - just awful. The matrix was not comfortable for the distances I was driving (Niagara Falls to Marathon Ontario in one shot and back 2 days later) The best were the Avenger and the Sonata.

I also drove accents, a jetta once, a 3/4 ton 4x4 crew cab long box chevy (through Toronto on the 401), a rio5 (nice!), a soul (bouncy), impala (so not as nice as any hyundai), many other "midsize" rental class mules.

It's even odd to me that the avenger always made me happiest. It really is the perfect car for long solo highway trips where things like handling, looks and performance beyond the adequate are simply not a factor.

No, I did not know that. To everyone else, those of you bring up things like handling characteristics, engine longevity, performance and other related, trivial matters… all I have to say is steering wheel radio controls are like mustard. You put mustard on anything and it’s good. Hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, shoe leather, all taste great with mustard. You put steering wheel radio controls in a car that normally sucks and it suddenly becomes a gem, an automotive marvel if you will.

Yeah!!! I love that feature. One of the coolest they have come up with. Amazing what two rockers switches with a center push button can do to the Luxury/Cool feel of a car
