I'm looking for some input on options for shocks on my car (95 Miata). It's going to get a lot of autocross use, a little track use, and some street use. I'm thinking that replacing the 17 year old stock shocks with some performance shocks will provide a nice handling upgrade. I'll be sticking with stock springs for now (so the car will stay in stock class), but I'd like to pick shocks that will work well with upgraded springs also (I'll eventually do that). I've been researching and I've found these two main options popping up:

  1. Tokico Illumina. These are recommended on Flyin' Miata's website and I put a lot of stock in what they say. I've also seen some posts online that think highly of them.

  2. Koni Yellows. A little more expensive than the Tokico's but I've seen lots of good stuff on these as well. Some of the autocross-specific posts Ive seen have people using "re-valved" Konis. I don't think I need to get into anything that fancy. I'm just trying to be locally competitive and have fun but the normal Koni yellows look like a great option.

Any opinions on those two options would be appreciated. If there's another option that I should be considering please let me know that too.

Koni Yellows do seem to be the go-to for off-the-shelf stock class shocks. My suspicion is because you can crank up the rebound damping and jack the car down, but whatever works. I'm not as fond of them with higher rate springs.

Not a bad recommendation. That's what I have on the Hairball.

In order for them to work well on stock springs and on stiffer ones, the shocks will have to be adjustable or you'll have to pay to have them revalved. So Bilsteins aren't necessarily the correct choice here.
