The trans dipstick in my elky is stupid long. Like almost hits the hood long.

Can I shorten it, and how?

Trans is a 700r4 and the dipstick tube is straight (not tapered or expanded or anything). Want to whack about three inches out of it.

Whack 3 inches off the end and file in a new "FULL" mark.

I believe that the end is twisted into a spiral. Will that matter?

One way to find out...

The spiral end is only there to make it easier to insert the dip stick. Sometimes a flat one will bind up inside the tube or at least cause some drag. I would try to twist it at least 90 deg. at the very end if you can. When I did this on a Ford van trans lube level stick I shorted the stick from the handle end keeping the part that went into the lube so I didn't have to change anything. I cut the stick near the handle end and then welded the lube end to what was left after shortening the stick to the desired length.

Cut off however many inches of the tube you need gone, then shorten the stick by the same exact same amount but cutting it towards the handle and riveting it back together.
