Tons and tons of maintenance history, for starters. Those aren't cheap cars to maintain so make sure your friend isn't buying someone else's headache.
With all due respect, a car like that should be looked at by someone who really knows those cars. Do your friend a favor and tell him to pay for a PPI by an independent Porsche garage. Of course, you should still go look at it to make sure it's worth paying for the PPI. IMO, if the car doesn't look pretty much perfect you should tell him to run.
I'd want to see a receipt book as thick as a classic Russian novel for starters. After that, check for normal car stuff that would make your run away. After that, have someone who really really knows Porsches climb over it with a fine toothed comb, and pay them well for it.
I have nothing to add other than you should look for stains on the seat where a driver may have lost bowel control from actually pressing the gas pedal all the way down.
check that punk kid in photo has never driven it?
all 996s have a Metzger engine. brings with it lack of intermediate shaft bearing failure

But thats a 997.....
I don't know much about details of these, what to look for, etc. I'd be worried why it was late for its 60k....

There's "turbo", "GT2" and "GT3" missing in that sentence above...
He need to get it in for a PPI and have the rpm history and overrun history printed out at a minimum.

That color is more desirable here in Texas A&M country. I know many fellow Aggies that specifically buy maroon cars (not me... I left my extreme fanboy-ism behind when I graduated).
I don't feel that there's any particular mismatch between the paint and the interior, either. Tan leather is frequently paired with reds of all shades.
