...because I just bought my next project: a 2005 Legacy GT wagon that just needs one part...
I'm going to be looking for some advice on this one.

get the transmission and the computer AND the engine

A BBQ Grill?
You guys make it hard for a guy who lives in an area of the country where space is at such a premium (San Diego)
This is (hopefully) going to be a pretty straightforward project: find a replacement engine, drop it in and make everything work again.

Same engine as the LGT. Pretty sure the tranny is a separate cpu too. I had an auto it was lovely beyond the fact that it never. Ever. Ran right after having a new block put in at the dealership.

Having replaced the engine in a WRX recently... do yourself a favor and triple-check your valve lash before you drop the engine in.
Also, the oil pump will not build pressure with just the starter. Or at least mine wouldn't. If you primed the new pump (I didn't), you might do better.
I usually put petroleum jelly in the pump to help it prime the first time. Most any EJ engine can work, but there are some extra steps you will need to do to make the AVCS work if you decide to put in an EJ207 or EJ257.
Aaaand....I dont like being a Debbie Downer but a manual swap would eat all the money you saved on this car with a quickness.

Hmmm, I must have missed that movie. Was it a follow up to Debbie Does Dallas?
The intake manifold was a bit different on the newer ('05 ish) EJ25's so keep that in mind. If you get a long block make sure you get the right intake manifold with the correct sensor setup.
As others have stated, priming the oil systems requires you to open up the oil pump and pack it with good ol' petro jelly. Crank the starter with no plugs, no coil and no injectors plugged in. Make sure the fuel line is connected though or you'll have a mess. Valve lash is easy in the N/A single cam Phase II motors because it's just a jam nut set-up. I think the dual cam (WRX) motors have puck type lifter shims which are a bitch to do in the car.

I saw that again last year, and all I could think about was how awful it was, even by porn standards
LSx!
Sorry, it's a requirement that this be suggested in every engine thread. I have no useful input.

Thanks but September 12 is a long way off. Of course, that would give me time to figure out how to buy from Copart...
If you need a core motor, a friend of mine has one from his wife's 05 LGT in his garage taking up space, and he is in way north Jersey, not far from you.

LSx swaps are so played out.

In my experience, how you buy from copart involves spending more money than I'm comfortable with (that is, IF you are a licensed salvage dealer).
