on both the race car and my rallycross car, those rear wheel well tow eyes are weak enough that I can bend them by hand (seriously, I tried last night). Maybe they were sturdier on later models, but on the early e30s they seem to be nothing more than flimsy tabs for tiedown during shipping.....25 years ago.

Rear shock tie downs are your friends.

In reply to mad_machine:

I'd upgrade the shock bolts to 10.9 grade hardware if going that route.

Mines a 1990 and no idea if they are any stronger than early models or not, only used them once to bring the car home and that's it.Hopefully it doesn't end up a trailer again anytime soon.

In a c-130, we plan for 4 g's forward (that's "preventing forward movement"), 2 g's aft, and 2 g's side to side. You got a 2500 lb e30, ensure you've got 10k lbs worth of straps/rings, etc keeping it from corn holing you in case of a meeting with an immovable object.

I've seen too many photos like this one to believe that for one instant....

Did that happen with 8.8, or 10.9 hardware? It would take quite the shock to break off a M10? 10.9 bolt like that.

no idea. The stock bolt is 10.9, IIRC. Either way, it doesn't make me warm and fuzzy. It would take quite a shock to break an 8.8 bolt like that as well, for that matter.

In most e30 tie-down discussions there are half a dozen people who have used shock-bolt tiedowns for a dozen years with no problems (according to them), and half a dozen people who have had a problem with that setup (according to them).

Really the only thing that almost everyone on the SpecE30 forums agrees is that axle straps around the rear subframe seem to be the safest bet (if not the easiest)...

I think you would be fine tie-ing down to that front bar on the trailer- the issue with that is rubbing the straps through on the steel.

The stake pockets will probably be fine but I would really watch the straps getting loose and the and fittings falling out. Those D-rings are definitely up to the task and I would use some 10k straps with the latches on the ends so if they do come loose, things wont fall off the car or trailer.

I am also not a big fan of using chains on a car. The chains won't give so something else will (car frame or trailer) as the car bounces on the trailer when rolling down the road. Straps will have some give to them to absorb the shock.

You can also, brakes and wheels permitting run a strap through the wheel itself.

Today I installed four D-rings, two at the bottom of the front bar (bolted through metal-wood-metal to underneath) and two at the rear corner sides. After this trip I'll weld a couple more along the rear lip of the deck where I really want them. Unfortunately my welder here ins't up to the job so that'll have to wait.

I plan to run a pair of 10,000-lb straps from the back corners to axle straps over the subframe (and a non-tensioned chain for safety), and a pair of 5,000-lb straps from the front to the tow eyes on the e30 up front.
