More than I'd ever care to spend.  There are plenty of 6MT ones out there, easier and much cheaper to buy one of them instead.

Drove a flashed 996 turbo today.  OMFG.  It was in another league of power compared to the 1M and, honestly, most of the cars I've owned, including my 489rwhp E46 M3.  This thing was insanely fast.

Back seats are pretty damn small.  He had a forward facing car seat in it for his 3 year old son and while my 5 year old would fit just fine, I wouldn't go as far as to say its roomy back there.  Not at all in fact....

The performance of the M2 and 1M is very close, difference is the 1M is going to appreciate sitting in my garage while the M2 is going to depreciate sitting in my garage.

I've driven the M2 at Lime Rock and the 1M at Mosport. They certainly look like they should be about the same on paper, but they feel pretty different. The M2 really is in a whole different league dynamically. I preferred it to the new M3 and M4 by a wide margin. The 1M feels fast, but a little one-dimensional. I keep coming back to the same analogy, but it really does feel like a hot-hatch rather than a "real" sportscar.

Having said that, you're 100% right about depreciation. The 1M is sure to hold its value better.

I get that driving it isn't all that special but neither is driving the E30 M3.

On the street, an E30 M3 makes no sense. No power and very buzzy. But it comes to life on the track. My 190E 2.3-16 is the same.

Was supposed to go check out 2 996 turbo's today but I unexpected had my son for the day.  One of the 996's was a good hour away, each way, so I postponed that.  Just didn't think the little guy would be all that entertained with that much travel time.

Then as I was getting ready to head out to check out the other one, a storm rolled in.  Seller contacted me and asked to postpone until tomorrow at noon due to the weather.  Bummer!  I understand tho, just disappointed.  However, tomorrow is my birthday and how cool would it be to buy a 911 Turbo on my birthday?

Got postponed again on the one 996 Turbo today.  Was supposed to be leaving now to go check it out, now it's going to be around 1pm.  I hope.

I drove a brand new M2 today and it was far more impressive than the 1M, even tho the 1M had been flash tuned and had coilovers.  Unfortunately the M2 was a DCT which isn't what I'm looking for, I want a 6MT.  Very nice car tho, BMW Performance exhaust sounded great, lots of power, extremely strong brakes and definitely a hooligan.  I thought I'd turned off traction control but seems like I just turned it down a bit, getting on the throttle hard coming out of a corner the rear end danced a little bit.  With the traction control all the way on and flooring it down a freeway on ramp, it kicked in again.  So, good signs for a fun car.  Decent sized trunk and back seat too.

None to be had in 6MT around me tho and you can't order a 2018 anymore, only the 2019's.  Now the 2019's are more car, they're coming with the S55 M3/4 motor (detuned) and big 6 piston front 4 piston rear brakes etc.  However, it won't be a lighter car compared to the M3/4 anymore, salesman said it'd actually weigh more than the M3/4.  Also said that the earliest I'd see it would be Christmas and very likely not until spring.  Plus its a more expensive car compared to the M2 now.

So, seems like if I want one, it's best to find a lightly used M2 6MT now.  Will be lighter than the incoming M2, which will make up for the power difference and I won't have to take the initial depreciation hit...

Hopefully I can check out the 996 Turbo today tho and make a deal on it...

Well, seller of the 996 Turbo got stuck at work, plan is to check it out tomorrow.  If it looks good I'll leave him a deposit...

Totally agree, but he's cross-shopping 996TT.  A 996 or E9x M3 would be my pick for $20k less than a nice 996TT.

I was just pointing out that the 1M is not in a particularly special performance bracket. I'm fine comparing it to whatever you want, but if you're looking for a track car I think it bears pointing out that it's not actually any faster than any given base model 911 of the last 15 years.

So I think I have a deal done on a 996 Turbo.  Handshake deal, I offered a deposit and the guy wouldn't take it.  So until this actually gets signed and delivered I'm a little nervous still.

Car is going to the dealer tomorrow, seller had the rear wing disabled and locked in the "up" position.  The dealer will reattach the harness and make sure the wing works as it should.  They're also going to replace the black plastic piece that goes along the bottom rocker as they cracked it the last time they worked on the car.

I also felt that the clutch wasn't getting the hydraulic assist it should have, so since the car will be at the dealer anyways, I requested the seller have them look into that.  The clutch slave and clutch slave accumulators break on these fairly commonly.

Hopefully hear from the dealer mid week and close the deal and have the car Friday.

Reading your posts, it sounds like the 996TT is the car you really wanted all along.

The one I drove had a funky clutch feel.  Initially pressing the pedal it was pretty heavy, but then the second application it would be much lighter.  Inconsistent.  Felt like a dry input shaft with the TOB dragging.

Maybe an bad accumulator?

Congrats on the selection and possible purchase.  Get the dealer to do a DME interrogation while it's there.  Look for Range 1/ Range 2 ignitions.

In reply to Tyler H :

That sounds like an accumulator leaking.  The car I drove felt like it had no hydraulic assist at all.  I'm not very worried about the DME over revs, this car never got used.  Current owner drove it an average of 550 miles a year!  Previous owners not a whole lot more than that.  Over its life, less than 2000 miles a year.

Seller has some other things for the car that he wants to sell me as well.  He's got a set of Toyo R888's that I'll most likely buy for sure.  He also has a Precision GT2 rear deck lid, which is an OEM knock off.  It's already painted to match the car but has never been put on.  I'm not sure how I feel about it, sometimes I look at them and think they look great, other times they look a little much.

He's asking a fair price for it, especially since its painted already and I wouldn't have to deal with shipping...

Other thing he has is a Tubi exhaust, which sounds awesome!  He's on the high side of asking price for it tho and I'm not 100% sure the car will pass emissions here with it.  I love a throaty exhaust on cars but bang for the buck definitely isn't there.  I can get a tune for half the cost that'll add three times the power...

Dunno, guess I'll see if the deal actually goes through and take it from there...

Range 2 overrevs are individual ignition events above the rev-limiter, aka money shift.  Should have zero, but it will tell you if there are any logged and the engine hour counter of the last event.  Conventional wisdom says don't buy if there are range 2 within the last 100 engine hr.

If you ask them nice, they might do it for free.  Takes 2 seconds with Durametric or their Porsche scantool.

Woo, good luck! Every time I see a clean 996tt go up on BaT, I get jealous for the buyer. Such awesome values, and they look every bit the part.

Well, got a call from the seller.  He told me he took it to the local dealer and they offered him more for it than what our agreed price was for it.  Also said they said the clutch was fine.  Which it is and isn't.  Clutch is fine but the hydraulic assist definitely isn't working.  Whatever.

Regardless, he tried to shake me down for more money, despite us having a deal in place already.  I refused.  Said I was happy to pay him what we agreed, if he wants more, sell it to the dealer.  Asked him to tell me yes/no right there.  He said he kinda didn't want to wait and have the dealer fix the rear wing and trim panel, that he'd rather get it done sooner.

I said fine, give me the trim panel and I'll put it on myself and I'll handle the rear wing.  Told him to send me his bank info and I'd wire the cash over to him.  Then he said he'd let me know in a few hours.

So, pretty upset right now.  This is why I wanted a signed bill of sale and a deposit down on the car.  Ironically on Saturday he asked me what I was worried about when he wouldn't do that, was I afraid he'd sell the car for more?  Yeah, well, apparently  so.

I'd be blown away if this deal goes through right now.  If it does, he's gotta sign a bill of sale before I pay him anything, with the price in big, bold letters and it also stating another set of wheels/tires go with the car.  Just like we agreed upon.

That’s a bummer.  When I was ready to sell my 993 I took it to the dealer first and they offered me a very fair offer that was basically zero hassle.  Just ‘bring us the title and we cut you a check’.  However the seller should have done that FIRST instead of wasting your time then backing out of a deal.  I hate that.
