I'd walk. You're taking on a lot of risk and hassle (trim panel, wing, clutch) just to get this car. You also want to take it for a PPI that's on your dime (and preferably where you already have a relationship) so you have a better shot of them telling you the truth.
Unless it's a screaming deal and you have to have it now, I'd walk.
Is it a good deal? Stick with it and see what happens. It isn’t the car’s fault it is owned by a shiny Happy person :)
i got my e36 m3/4/5 from a guy who was a total douchebag. I won’t go into details, but I decided that if I could get the car for the price we agreed on, it would be worth it.
And it was.
That clutch issue would have me walking away, unless the price was low enough to cover the problem.

Clutch really is fine, its just not getting the hydraulic assist it should be getting. The accumulator needs to be replaced, which isn't a big deal.
So the seller called me last night and we're back on. Basically at the deal with agreed upon. I've sent him a bill of sale which I've signed and I'm waiting for him to sign it and return it to me. I also wrote up a sales addendum explicitly listing out all the things that are included in the sale of the car, which we both sign as well.
Then I ask him how he wants to get paid. I bank remotely, no local branch as its USAA. I offered to do a money wire, but he said his personal banker doesn't recommend those? Um, ok. So I offered to do a bank check then, which I think is less secure, but that's his choice.
He's supposed to be talking with his banker this morning and then let me know, he said I could send him a deposit via paypal but I'm not sure the email I have is his paypal addy. I called and texted him last night asking, but still didn't hear. So I still don't have a deposit down on the car.
So, still not sure this is going to be happening but it seems closer now at least.
You do ALL your banking with USAA? I used to do that but NavyFed is WAY better. Even now I hate using USAA even with the minor things I use it for, to be honest. And I live in the only place they have a branch lol.

Yup. Have been since I was active duty, so almost 20 years now. There aren't a whole lot of NavyFed branches near me, so if I was going to use a brick and mortar bank I'd just pick a local one.
I do have an account for my daughter at a local bank so I suppose I could send the money to that account and then meet him there and do the transfer.

Just talked to the seller, I'm going to run this through my daughters bank account. Just meet him there and get it taken care of, plan is this Thursday afternoon.
That way I can have the car that day and get to the DMV Friday morning and get all the paperwork taken care of
In reply to docwyte :
Hope it works out!
Have you heard of the Zelle app?

I don’t know why some people are scared of bank wires. Way safer for the seller than a cashiers check imo.
Anyway, good luck! Hope it works out for you.
I would drop a VERY serious bid on this one and discourage every other potential buyer:
2003 911 Turbo - 22k miles - 6 speed
that's a slick X50. A deal even at 40k

I think you need to add $20k to your number ...

That's a mid $50k's car all day long and most likely close to $60k. Far beyond my price range unfortunately.
I've got the funds moved appropriately and have set up the day/time to meet the seller at the bank and take care of this. Hopefully by dinner time this Thursday I'll have a 911 turbo sitting in my garage.
Hope your daughter doesn’t see some extra money and spend it

Well, since she's only 13 and doesn't even know where the account is I should be safe! Hopefully have this done this afternoon...

Got it! Met the seller at the bank yesterday and gave him a bank check. He had the spare wheels/tires and front lip with him.
Then I hopped in his truck and went to his house where I picked up the 911. Some more goodies were in the frunk including all the records, original window sticker, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, car cover, etc, etc.
Today I was up early and hit the DMV right when they opened so I could take care of all the paperwork.
Plans are to replace the microswitch on the rear wing to get it working properly, replace the clutch slave accumulator and put clear bra on the front of it. Oh yeah, I also need to get some bumper plugs for the front license plate. Without one there are two little square holes in the bumper cover...
Seller has an aftermarket, painted GT2 rear deck lid and a Tubi exhaust that he's offered me for more $$. Not sure about either, seems like my best bang for the buck is a tune first...
My son loved it!
Congrats, I'm glad it worked out!
Looks really good!
Don't buy the extra deck, leave as is.

Yeah, I'm inclined to leave the body stock. If he sells me the exhaust for a decent price I'll buy it tho.
Congrats!! Now it's time to change your avatar
