That overhang is a bit too much. I like the later 87-88 Monte and Cutlass front clips with the rectangular headlights. That boxier front end might match up better.
If forming plastic were easier (or something I knew how to do) taking this idea and applying it to the civic might work out.
What the Malibu needs is to be converted to a two seater. Section 8 inches out of the rear of the roof and shift forward. Still whacked, but very pimp. Sort of like these:
