In reply to GameboyRMH :

Deep discharge isn't really a concern with EVs.  The battery monitors prevent that (which is how some Prius owners get more EV range - by overriding the programming).

Either way, range estimates seem to be a vague subject and there doesn't seem to be a standard testing method yet. Range also seems to be temperature dependent.   Range at 100°F withe A/C cranked will be different than at 65°F with just a fan running and different than at 0°F with the heat cranked.

Sort of looks like a 3 wheel first gen Insight. That's not a bad thing. $13k for 150 miles would meet my needs nicely.

that would cover my weekly commute perfectly

I do about 40 miles round trip. I'm figuring with heat or AC it'd be shaving it close.

The ramp up in oil production outside of OPEC countries has really put a damper on at a whim fluctuations in prices. So I'm not sure, barring some sort of major catastrophe or commodities trading algorithm glitch, we're going to see 5 dollar a gallon gas again any time soon which would kick EV sales into high gear.

I do like that this thing appears to have 3 real deal car tires on it which means you can fit legitimate snow tires to it instead of the motorcycle tires.

*Usual caveats regarding mass production of vehicles being hard go here*

As long as gas is cheap, vehicles like this will have a limited market.

There will always be a limited market for vehicles that don't actually exist.

Is Elio even still in business?

Technically. Last I heard from Jalopnik they are caught in between chapter 11 liquidation or chapter 7 and switching to production of some other electric item.

So roughly chapter 9 of the novel they are traveling through... :)

Car seems interesting but more importantly the average hilarity of posts in the thread is WAY above par. yes

I think this will appeal to those that are trying to lessen their carbon footprint. If I owned one, it would go a long way to offsetting the amount of dead dinosaurs my Rover drinks

Perhaps, but the first generation Prius sold like crap - by most accounts because it looked like a run of the mill compact Toyota.  When they changed to the cam-back design that stood out, sales took off (although hurricane Katrina helped).

Otherwise, I agree - a base model could theoretically meet my current commuting needs, assuming that is "real world" range with A/C and/or heat running and not just "best" range.

that's just it. I rarely use air conditioning. I think I only turn it on if I take my mother some where because of her issues with breathing. In the winter I would switch over to the Disco for full time use.

I am liking this. I am kinda hot for an EV DD anyway as I have plenty of other projects/toys for the weekend.  An EV is perfect for me as I have a 3 mile commute to work so I don't need a massive range.  My only issue is it can't be slow.

Electric toothbrushes?  Will it get 84 brushes per charge?

And you pay an extra $50 if you want it to last a whole 120!

But really, if you haven't read the whole story. This company took advantage of a town for this idea, and I don't know if what's left of the company is going to attempt to salvage anything.
