So, I was thinking the other day, the current gen GT-R is huge and expensive. Who doesn't think that? The R32s that you can import are still somewhat expensive and have legal hoops to deal with. Plus, there are parts availability issues. Not for the faint of heart.
So, stupid exercise: If I wanted something that is/was available in the US that has a (R32-34) GT-R like personality, what should I be looking at?
I was looking at cramming an AWD Cadillac CTS drivetrain into a 3rd gen f-body once...
Wait, you weren't looking at "some assembly required"?
Audi Quattro with manual and 5cyl + turbo?
E30 chassis 325iX? Not sure if that drive line will support enough power to get a GTR like driving experience.
GMC Cyclone/Typhoon? Yeah I know, they are trucks, but they aren't especially heavy, have RWD biased AWD and take a lot of power.
The picins' are slim.

Since this is only mostly theoretical and my thread, I'd say some mods are fine, but major surgery isn't. Closer to stock is more betterer.
The first thing that came to my mind was a 335xi, with some aftermarket suspension pieces. Thoughts?
What about the Trailblazer SS and Grand Cherokee SRT8? They both weight slightly twice as much as an R34 I think, but they've got the big power AWD covered.
3000gt vr4 or stealth twin turbo. AWD, turbo, 6cyls. As long as you ignore the weight or fragilty, it's as close as you can get. Cheap too.

The other AWD Japanese car from that time frame that people forget about is the Galant VR4.
Mitsubishi Galant VR4 - very rowdy with lots of power potential. Only downside is they are a bit piggy.

Came here to say this /\
I would love to see a high powered Saab turbo x, I know they can hit 400-500hp and there is a company overseas that supposedly can build the haldex awd to stand behind high power without failure.

I thought these had one slight problem though.
