My repain manual is in my garage (2 miles from my house with snow piled aginst the door thanks to the lawncare company next door) so I cannot get to it to check. I had the lights on the odometre go out last night. The display is still there and functioning just cannot read it. It is lit by LEDs or just a standard incandescent lamp?

Try looking it up on Pelican or RealOEM.com?

Assuming you're talking about the e36 the odo lights are incandescent to the best of my knowledge.

Just did this on my wife's E36 M3/4/5. Odo is lit by 2 1.5 watt beige base incandescents. Try rmeuropean.com for PN# and pricing. If you don't have tilt steering, count on removing the wheel. Airbag comes out w/T27 torx. I forget the torx size for the 2 screws for the cluster, but at least you can see what you're doing for those. Pretty straightforward.
