Inspired by Robert Thorne’s “Big Bad Wolf,” the self-professed “fastest Honda S2000,” Alexander Moss and Andy Smedegard wanted to build an even faster S2000. They now have one that rivals that famous vehicle. Meet SuperK, a K-swapped, DCT 2006 Honda S2000.

SuperK won the 2020 King of the Mountains autocross event at UMI Motorsports Park. It took the 2020 Gridlife …

Very interesting read. I knew a few things about this car but I greatly enjoyed this deeper look.

are BMW DCTs the new "cheap" sequential? I'm certainty interested in flappy paddle 7 speed with my low power car, would make for a riot on stage!

its not like my 130wtq is going to break something mean for a high power/weight BMW lol

That's been a thing for a while now. N54/n55 DCT transmissions being cheap and all.

knew I had some pics from SuperK's first OneLap, when it was supercharged, and they were pulling the belt off the supercharger pulley for transits... was just looking in the wrong thread.  I forget what Andy was tweaking here, after the Grissom Autocross (iirc)...

edit:
even got an "artsy" shot from Nelson the next day:

Interesting amalgamation of parts .... can't imagine the amount of work to get them all to coexist and play nice.  But, it's not easy being green ....and since the car reminds me of nothing more than Kermit the Frog, seems appropriate.

Anybody have any insight into the "the aluminum flywheel kept trying to exit the car so we pushed them to make a CrMo one" part?

I can't imagine there's anything about a K24 that's... I dunno, allergic to aluminum?

I'm no expert on flywheels, but this is something I'd like to know more about before it becomes a practical matter.

My guess would be the rpms and the forces on it from the dual clutch system

ARA rule blah.whatevs.(blah) sez that transmissions may not be electronically controlled.

Could be.  IIRC the BMW trans generally just uses a coupler, clutch is internal.  If BMW had a dual mass coupler and the Honda does not, that can be a recipe for ugh.

Also worth mentioning that Andy is fantastic to deal with. I was in talks with him on swapping the DCT into a project of mine, and after going over the parameters and goals, he actually talked me out of it. Not because he didn't want my money, but because it wasn't the right transmission for my project. That's class. =)

So what did you use instead, and why? The DCTs intrigue me, but I'm hesitant to lose that feeling of nailing a perfect shift

This is the second Henry Kissinger reference I've seen in 24 hours. The other was in Inside Job on Netflix. Weird.

I love this thing! It got me inspired to get off myarse and get my S2000 completed. Dad and I want to do the one lap in it next year if possible.

We must have a different threshold for what we consider "cheap"  cheeky

In reply to mr2peak :

Sorry for the delay, I don't keep up with the forum much. I haven't made any progress with this project, life got in the way in a big way this year, so car projects have been minimal for me.

Realizing that I'm not crazy about science project cars anymore, if / when I finally put together the budget for the transmission replacement, I'm going to be working with Grannas on a T56 Magnum swap. It's the best value to performance to servicing ratio for me.

I've considered swapping the F22C out of my AP2 S2000 more than once, in favor of a K24. I fear if I ever did that, I might get a little wild. I admit I love the sound, character and feel of the F22C, but as a more future-proof solution, K24's are far easier to find in running condition, not to mention far cheaper if something goes wrong.

If my F22C ever lets go, it will be replaced with either a K24 or depending on my budget and power goals, it's hard to deny the appeal of the K20C1 OEM turbo swap from SoS:

Dear Andy: please find a way to make a K20C1 swap more cost effective.

"I decided to devote my life to it, and not get sidetracked by all the other bullE36M3 that life has to offer." - Cliff Burton

BMW's use a dual mass coupler, as well as not having to deal with the harmonics of a 4-cylinder engine. Without a sprung/dual mass adapter, the common failure point in 4-cyl applications is the clutch baskets shearing off near the input spline.

As cool as the DCT is, I foresee the 8HP to be the next hot swap, as it can be controlled just as well and by the same controllers as the DCT, and they are plentiful.

Brent from PFI Speed's K swapped/sequential S2000 drag car. Might give the original car a run for it's money at least for a 1/4 mile.
