I routinely drive long distances, and I find myself wanting an early (89-91) Taurus SHO to use as my 'road car.' The trouble is that, here in New England, those cars are basically extinct. My question is: can the 96-9 V8 SHO drivetrain be swapped into an early, non-SHO Taurus? The 96-9 cars are still cheap and plentiful, but they are just so ugly! How different are the blocky first-gen cars from the suppository-shaped later cars, under the skin? Hopefully, I can find a survivor of an 89-90ish Taurus (bonus points if its a wagon!), then buy a 96-9 V8 SHO and swap the whole front subframe, including the V8 and automatic into the early car. Does anybody know for sure how closely 1st and 2nd gen cars are under the skin?

They share front subframes and thats about it. You'd also have to deal with OBD2 into an OBD0/1 vehicle, and I'm not completely sure that the 3.4L v8 will fit into a 86-95 taurus engine bay.

Edit: Scratch that, the front subframes are different. The G3 ones will go into an older car(we see it as an upgrade), but the older subframes aren't the same.

You can fit the sho v6 into any 86-07 taurus/sable though.

I'd also prefer the V6, especially with a 5spd manual. But, if I could find a car so equipped, I'd just keep it (no need for an engine swap). I'm only considering the V8 donor car because they are still abundant.

There is a really nice silver '92 MTX somewhere on the east coast for a reasonable price. I think somewhere in MD iirc.

Buying a southern first or second generation car seems like a better plan.

I believe that the V-8 needs a modification to the valves or cams to be reliable. The V-6 is a great engine.

Welding the cams......pretty bullE36 M3 when the Ford test mules were "pinned" to prevent that exact failure. And when they fail its a complete destruction of the engine moment.

And POWAR won the thread, thats what we all do, head south.
