There were two Audis behind him. Why on earth would he then dive in for the apex? He certainly wasn't blameless.

Because the closest Audi to him had backed off and was going to follow him. McNish passed his teammate and TRIED passing the Ferrari all at once. BTW, McNish has taken all the blame.
I'm wondering if McNish's view was blocked and by the time he was on the side, it was too much momentum. Also, good thing it was a closed car this year!
Pretty obvious blue (passing) flag given to the Ferrari (you can even see it in the in-car on the link above)......he could have given the Audi a bit more room.
But it's still McNish's responsility to overtake safely.
Either way, I am VERY glad he walked away safely. McNish is by far my favorite driver in any series. Such a stand up guy.

Empirically, it was a pretty insane/out of place move for the traffic pattern that existed at that moment. It was like "turning, turning, turning, AUDI ALL UP IN YOUR BUSINESS!!!"
Sweet that the 458 was repaired so quickly.
The blue flag does not mean get out of the way right now. It simply means, there is a faster car following you.

it would take a HUGE Ferrari hater to think Ferrari had anything to do with that crash.... that was McNish all the way...
one of the first things you learn when you go to the track is that it is YOUR responsibility to pass safely .... that said if the car being overtaken is being a real shiny happy person and blocking up a storm .... maybe a little nudge is ok... depends .... but this ??????
even if the Ferrari managed to anticipate that kind of idiot move, you have to wonder if the Audi could have braked hard enough to miss the Porches that were right in front of the Ferrari
I must say, I am impressed with the Speedtv.com coverage in the "off time". It's great! There are a couple commercials here and there, but overall, it's just an extension of the TV coverage. I LOVE ONLINE STREAMING!
Take a look at that one suspension assembly...goes up in the air, bounces hard & fast off two walls, and chases a photographer. That could have really done some damage.
Wow, that's a scary crash. Watch the car as it hits the wall, pirouettes on the top, and then falls down on the side where the car makes contact. When I was viewing it the first time, I said to myself "that car's going over and this is going to be ugly." Thank God it didn't...
O)n a lighter note, I dig seeing Michael Waltrip in this thing--in a 458, no less. Very cool to see the NASCAR good ol' boys throwing down in LeMans. He just said he's behind in terms of pace, but he's got a lot to learn. Really good attitude out of him.
I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I like seeing successful racers out of their normal element.
Rockenfeller Audi destroyed. Was traveling at very high speed and overtaking a slower GT car when they came in contact. Not sure about Rocky right now.....fingers crossed.
Edit-reports are that Rocky got out of the car and has survived. If that's true, based on the crash video, that's amazing. Car was going about 180 mph. No report on injuries.
Confirmed he got out of the car under his own power. WOW! not a good day for Audi. I wonder what kind of rule changes these two accidents will lead to?
That one WAS the Ferrari driver's fault, no doubt. VERY fast part of the track going in nose first. Word is from the ACO, he got out of the car under his own power.
Rocky was flashing his lights like crazy to warn the driver, at that speed differential, I don't think there was much more he could have done.
As crazy as these incidents are, the emotion coming from Dr. Ulrich makes my heart light.
was away from the tv when it happened .. missed all the replays (so far ) that show race footage of what happened... what did the Ferrari driver do ?
hope Rock is ok ... last I heard he was on the gurney and being transported to medical...
The Ferrari on the outside of the entry to Indianapolis had a fast closing Audi on his tail. Rocky flashed his lights like a mad man, but to no avail. The Ferrari closed down at the apex, forcing Rocky to put two wheels off to complete the pass. The Ferrari then continued into the left rear fender of the Audi, essentially PITTing it into the outside wall at about 190 miles per hour.
The Audi split into two halves, and nobody knew what was up until a few minutes had passed.
