I agree, especially from a cost/complexity standpoint up front since we know diesels carry a premium up-front cost, not to mention on this side of the pond diesel prices are not always in tune with power density parity. I remembered Peugot had that diesel electric hybrid prototype/demonstrator several years ago that drove across Australia or something that got over 100MPG. Your post reminded me and I looked it up and sure enough they turned the tech into a production vehicle. I don't think it means much for the US, but in Europe, where CO2 emissions factors into your taxes it's huge, so it is at least interesting one is in production...
