I couldn't believe it, but yes it looks Freiburger is selling the muscle truck from the show.
I know I'll miss seeing it in their episodes.
If you have a LOT of $$$ here's the link to the auction on ebay: Roadkill Muscle Truck
As of this moment it's going for $50,200
It's cool, but couldn't you pay any one of 100's of shops in the country to make you one just like it for waaaaaay less than $50k? Or, you know, make one yourself?

Exactly, especially because way back when they built it, they said they had $12 grand invested in it, tops. Since then it's got EFI and a new bed floor and nitrous, but still likely $15K tops.
I'm upset that they are selling this car, which has been one of the fan favorites, and not some of the stupid other junk sitting around, like the tow truck they just got for no reason or Pig Pen

Yes, yes you could. I'm sure the huge $$$ premium is because it is THE muscle truck from the show. Only one in existance.

If someone will pay $50k+ for this one why not sell it? They can build another 5 of them or something else.

This. I'm sad to see it go too. I was really surprised to see it for sale.

My guess is that because Dodge now sponsors the show, they would take a very dim view of basing an entire episode on the muscle truck. Since Dodge started sponsoring, there has been little attention paid to vehicles with non Dodge/Chrysler bodies or drivetrain. I think the one exception was probably the NasCarlo?
Roadkill - please loose the Dodge sponsorship!

There has been plenty of non-Dodge episodes since the Dodge sponsorship started (38). The Monte Carlo lowrider episode (39), the episode where Randy Pobst drove the Draguar (41), the episode where they ran LeMons with the Rotsun (42), the episode where they bought a Ford F-6, then road-tripped the El Camino and then drag-raced Blasphemi (44), the episode with the Oldsmobile-powered Mazda REPU (45), the NasCarlo episode (46) and the most recent episode where they bought a Ford tow truck to go pick up an old GMC truck.
So there has been plenty of non-Dodge content. Freiburger has repeatedly stated that they don't bend to Dodge's will and the continued variety of cars proves that. In fact, since Dodge sponsorship started, there has only been 3 episodes prominently featuring Dodges. And that may have happened anyways, as Freiburger is, at his core, a Mopar guy.
Considering how hard they've beat on that thing I'm not sure it would be a very good buy.
Can someone explain ebay bids to me please. Before denouncing Freiburger I went to look at the bidding history. The starting price was $200, so I think it's idiots bidding, but a bidder showing up as e**M has most of the bids with dozens being consecutive. Does that mean he entered a max bid so it kept ratcheting up? If so why doesn't other bidders show up between his consecutive bids?

That means he entered a max bid and whenever someone else bids it up but lower than the max bid the price goes up but he is still the high bidder.

I remember that he sold the old 350,000 mile Sierra Grande (The trusty Macho Grande) and people bid that thing up to around $12,000 almost instantly. It ended up going overseas to Iceland(?) and recently they had a pick in the magazine of someone who spotted it still on the job over there

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm capable of liking a car enough to turn down a buyout for ~5x what I have in it.
Someone should do a spreadsheet to determine the actual cost to build something like this.. assuming no work From yourself....
Let's see..
1. Truck.. $2k?
-
9inch rear end with 5.13's and locker.. probably $2K cheapest
-
LS6 motor $5-6K
-
MSD atomic EFI $2500
-
Crane cam rockers, BBK intake misc engine junk $2500
-
Headers/exhaust work $1500?
-
Nitrous $1K
-
Ridetech suspension $3500 (front and rear to get rid of cruddy rear suspension)
-
Trans and converter shifter $2500
-
Misc ( Wheels tires, brakes, fuel system).. $2500 (assume cheapish)
I'm probably missing some things. I think this is $15K to $20K in parts with a contigency. Shop time to build in tweak is probably two guys for two weeks. Assume $80/hr shop rate per person.. $160/hr * 8/hr/day * 10 Days = $12800 for assembly..
So you get this done for $30-$35K?
Dude, you can get LS6 engines on Craigslist for $1000 all day long. I could build that truck for, like, $6k.
(I am simply providing the standard Internet Expert commentary to your "math")

pay me 50k and i'll build you one with a supercharged LSA crate motor

But seriously, one could probably piece together something with similar performance for under $10k, skipping or subbing out most of the "I'm Dave Freiburger and have this stuff laying around" stuff. E.G. You don't need a GV OD equipped TH400, you need a craigslist 4L80E with a $250 Transgo full manual kit.
Is Freiburger asking $50K or is that what its been run up to? There's your answer on who to vilify.

Bidding started at $200. So he was not asking $50K. Same thing happened with his old Sierra Grande, that junk got bid to like $12K overnight. For a stock, 350,000 mile 1973 GMC Sierra Grande.

yes.. hahahaha.. I love it when magazine guys say. "I have $X into this XXXX" When they are getting parts for free or at cost... reproducing that truck even with valuing your own labor at $0/hr would be tough for $12K
