I've been sayin for years. They should outlaw studs. The roads in Oregon are ridiculous. It looks like a damn "W". Instead of catering to the idiots, they should be forced to learn how to drive without.
Or they could take care of the roads better so we didn't need studs. In idaho if the school buses aren't going down the road it isn't gonna be plowed. So most my winter is spent driving on compacted snow that's a few inches thick and has zero traction. Studs have literally saved my life in a few occasions
Two winters ago I as in far north VT. During the night there was an ice/snow storm.
Took me nearly a half hour to get the car clean enough that I could drive. My old Blizzaks did there job on the secondary roads. Then when I got on the interstate, I 89 the traffic was in a train on the right lane at about 45 mph. I looked over at the left lane, Hard packed snow & ice, no one there, so I thought, Hmm, Ill try it. Great. Was able to go 60 mph with no problem. No studs needed.

If the generals are on option, do that. That said any snow tire will be better than A/S. The fact that the generals are usually within $1 of the cheapest is just a bonus.
