Would you consider buying a Limited Slip Differential that had surface rust and matched this description?
It's never been used otherwise. I could buy a brand new one/bearings/bolts for approx $150 more.

The LSD was thrown outside by my roommate when I was moving to my new apt., along with everything else I own. Unknowingly, too :/ It suffered minor surface rust, but I just sanded and cleaned it by hand with 2000 grit sand paper. The bolts have minor rust on them as well, but the rust came off when I threaded them into the LSD. You may need a new bearing for the diff because it was in the box as well. I have the LSD now resting in some ATX fluid in my storage closet to keep it lubed and protected from the elements.
The internals of the LSD did not take on any rust--only the outer case--and the input shaft spots weren't touched as well.
In reply to novaderrik:
I've dug a BMW e30 LSD off of a car that was buried in mud and run it.
+3 if the price is right.
If the difference is only $150 for what I am figuring is a $1000 part... I'm not sure that it's a good deal.
If it was HALF off... run it!
I'm not entirely certain your car needs a limited slip that badly. Shifter bushings yeah, but it seemed to put the power down fairly well.

This is what I'm thinking.

The bushings are mostly okay. What it really needs as far as the shift linkage goes is some heat shielding and/or insulation. The shifter only gets stiff at high ambient temperatures combined with prolonged high rpm abuse.
Yeah, what's 150 as a percentage of the cost new? If in fact it's a $1000 part, I'd want it cheaper than that given its history.
go new. Im slowly learning the difference between using a cheap used part and a slightly less cheap new part can be measured in "time the wound took to heal" and "number of trips to the ER due to injuries sustained during re-assembly"
Looking more carefully, the price difference is less than $150.
Brand new Mfactory Helical LSD + bearings + shipping = $765
New but rusty Mfactroy LSD + probably rusty bearings+ shipping = $720
So at this point the obvious answer is to pass. I'll still be one-wheel-drive for the foreseeable future.
Appears to be Stage I rust (there are 4 stages) Base metal is not effected.
Run it, if you can beat him down all the better.
