Need a best bang for the buck tire recommendation for the tow vehicle.  2008 Silverado 2500 diesel rwd.

Considerations:

  • No All Terrain or off road use needed.
  • No snow.
  • Towing heavy 9k trailer.
  • 265/70/17
  • About 6k miles per year so longevity is not super important.
  • Mostly dry conditions but when it rains, it pours so want decent wet weather performance.

Considering:

  1. General Grabber HTS 60
  2. Toyo Open Country H/T
  3. Kumho Krugen HT51
  4. Yokohama Geolander G056
  5. Cooper Discoverer HT3
  6. Recommend me?

Would appreciate any input on what tires to go with and why.  Michelins are way too expensive these days at $300!

Thanks!

I went to Discount Tire and bought five of their highest rated commercial tire. It's a BFG Commercial T/A all-season, and I bought road hazard on the four that went on the truck. The fifth went under as the spare. They're super common on commercial vans and trucks, so they're in stock nationwide.

I'm 60,000 miles in, probably 50,000 of those miles towing in all conditions except snow and ice, and I have half the tread left and there's no sign of cracking on the sidewalls. They're four years old now. This will be their last season. I'll replace them next winter based on age alone.

But in the interim? I've done nothing but maintain the pressures and rotate them every 15K miles or so.

So, data point. Good luck

My 2006 F250, 2wd, the Govt Mule came with Toyo HTs which is what the Ohio Dept of Transportation chose for the truck before its accident and I bought it.  I'd think that the ODOT garage would hold some strong opinions on tire brands/choices.  I have nothing negative to say about them.  I've had them for 5 years bu only 15k miles in that time. They still look great.  Outdoors all year, in Ohio.

Of the choices you've given above, my tire online retailer of choice  has the Toyos at $190.41 each in your size but they have the Kuhmos from your list at $194 and an immediate $17.50 off = $176.50

They have some Michelins at $242 each

Their house brand, Ironman, is as cheap as $138 each.  Branded as Hercules Tires and manufactured by Cooper Tire.  I have no experience with the house brand but I'm not a Cooper Tire fan.

The retailer offers 10% off discount for Military, Teacher, Healthcare, First Responder, Gov't Worker

I have Bridgestone Duravis HD on our dually - R500 on the front and M700 on the rear.  The M700 has a slightly more aggressive tread, but is not into real A/T territory.  They have been trouble free and very quiet for the last 3 years and 25000 miles, and look brand new.

Unfortunately, when I went to look them up on TR, they are over $100/tire more expensive than they were in 2020!!

I have also had very good experiences with BFG Commercial T/A in the past, but like the 'Stones they are $300/tire now.

I'm running Sumitomo Encounter HT tires on my RV. 17k pounds all the time and they have been an outstanding tire.

Even loaded and towing the race car they work very well. That's about 22k pounds combined.

I bought a set of B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A's for my C30 Dooley, and I've been quite happy with them.  I got mine (all 6 of them) through tire rack, basing my selection on price and ratings.  Whatever you get, make sure they're Load Range E or better.

Conti TerrainContact H/T would get my vote if not going Michelin. Great wet performance.

Thanks fellas. Wound up ordering the Toyo Open Country HT2. Also bought some new  MB wheels in 17". Discount Tire is having a sale on these for $124 each plus $100 off.

Tire Rack also has a bunch of those rebates on tires but they expire today and didn't apply to the tires I needed so bought at the local store.

The BFGs are pretty much Michelins.
