Something magical happens when a Toyota 4A-GE engine is paired with individual throttle bodies. We'd even argue that with this setup, this is one of the best sounding four-cylinder engines of the '80s and '90s.

My favorite video for 4AGE noises is this one of Tsuchiya at Ebisu circuit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rkgN_Isf3o
I love Keihin flat slide carbs; I've had a set on the Datsun for 12 years now, they make more power than the DCOE type carb and are just absolute works of art.
The 4AG in Formula Atlantic trim is glorious
If you really want to go old school, an L20 Datsun with Webers, a header , a 2 1/2 inch exhaust and a good old American turbo muffler sounds awfully good.
I'd say you nailed it with this one....love the sound of the 4A-G...especially when tuned! Here's a short (old) video of one fairly local to me that gets me every time:
The sound is a large part of why I can't bring myself to sell mine with the built ITB 16V, even though my heart's not really in it and I don't ever really drive it anymore!
You don't need ITBs for a sweet sounding 4AG....... single T/B smallport (if video isn't loading, here is the link - https://vimeo.com/37280876 )
As it does overlap into the 80s. I would put the Fiat TwinCam into that same camp. the 124/125/132 series engine is an overlooked little jewel
Besides being one of the few cars that could compare with or better an FR-S in the handling/driving feel department, the 4AGE is the main reason I decided on getting the AW11 MR2... always wanted a car with that engine...
Race built 4AGE motors are absolutely beautiful sounding things...
When I had the 87 MR2 I managed to find a 4-2-1 header, had it cleaned and installed with a small Vibrant muffler, no cat. That thing sounded wonderful at 6k RPM, wish I could find the dyno video quickly.
My SCCA Club Racing friend had a similar MR2 with ITB's, that thing sounded wicked.
