Pole Position was the pinnacle. I set a few high scores back in the day. Now if I want to drive, I drive.
I think the most complete racing game experience I've ever had comes courtesy of the Forza horizon series, though I spent an improper amount of time on the nfs series circa ps2, mostly most wanted and carbon. They changed the steering sometime during the the PS3/xb360 era and the games have not been enjoyable since then.

I honestly don't even remember the racing I that one, but what I wouldn't do for that level of customisation in a modern racing game. Subs amps screens lights nitrous bottles, then carbon introduced customizable body panels.
I really wish they'd go back to that instead of the arcade like fast n curious style they've adopted
I used to like playing Night Driver at the arcade.
They left off Pitstop 2 which back in the day I thought had really cool graphics on my Commodore 64. The animated pitstops were really cool.

Saying this when you're two laps into a ten lap race on the Nürburgring.

There's an abandonware version of this game called stunts- it was basically a pc port. It was half remade about 10 years ago as a game called ultimate stunts. It was never finished and last updated I wanna say in 2012, but even the beta version was pretty fun.

You needed ALL the quarters when you played Hard Drivin. That game was brutal.
$2.00. 2 berkin bucks-in 1990 money! And one run. Only one. Crash and you're done. Like I said, brutal

Force feedback - and decent feedback at that - made it worth the money.
The same folks made a ground attack helicopter game called Steel Talons.
