I got to stripped down the W8 engine from the transaxle and cradle, and weighed it today.

Engine was complete with flexplate, alternator, no starter, no ac, no pspump, no exhaust manifolds.

It weighed in at 460 lbs.   That seems rather high, but I used the same scale and weighed a Volvo T5 engine, complete with turbo at 320 lbs, which seems about right,

and a Toyota 1NZ-fe  Complete at 220 lbs (which is very light!).   This is a hanging scale, which was hung from my engine hoist to hold up the engines.

I will be weighing my Subaru EZ30R engine and my Mazda KLDE v6 in the week or so too, and heck maybe a SBC shortblock to see what the scale says.

I weighed the KLDE Mazda V6 today.  Came in at 330 lbs.  No flywheel, alt, a/c,ps, and one missing exhaust manifold.   I was expected less.

I also weighed the Audi AWD transmission, HP19, this was 260 lbs without the converter which is probably another 30lbs.  Heavy  Beast.

Previously I have weighed at Audi Multitronic (their CVT), and it was 220 lbs, and doesn't need a torque converter, has an internal wet clutch.

And I just bought a couple Subaru CVT's the newer TR580, and it was 230lbs without the torque converter, which it uses, and probably adds another 30lbs.

Also weighed the Ford 5-speed manual from a 99 Ford explorer, which I believe is the Mazda MD05, it was only 100 lbs, rather lightweight.

Still haven't pulled the EZ30 yet to see where it lands.

Took me two days to pull a Volvo B844 4.4 V8 from the JY.  And then I stripped two torque converter bolts, T47 a T45 is not good.

So I weighed it with it the TQ still on it and got 470lbs, so deduct 20lbs for the TQ and get 450lbs.

Without exhaust manifolds, or A/C, but alt, ps, wiring, etc.   Pretty much about the same as the W8.

It produces 310hp.  This is a very compact engine, while longer than the W8, it is much narrower.   I have pics and videos of all these engines,

but I am just giving y'all the basic details.

...

I also checked if my scale was reading correctly...using bags of concrete, and it was pretty much spot on as I stacked 50lb bags,

so I am confident my numbers are correct.

So really the 1.5 toyota at 220lb is amazingly light, and the winner is the T5 Volvo at only 320lbs as far as lower weight and HP potential,

although I haven't weighed the 13b yet, but with two turbos it won't be super light (note the T5 weigh INCLUDES the turbo)

Interested in the EZ30 weight. I keep flip flopping between the EZ30 and EJ205 swap for a Rallycross car.

For the Toyota 1NZ-FE and Volvo T5 engines, did they have the same accesories on them as the W8? I assume the engines were also dry? I have a friend who is putting a Volvo 5 into an E30 and it would be cool info to have.

All these engines the oil pans are empty.  The 1NZ was a prius engine, so no alternator.  The T5 no front belt accessories.

I think the W8 and the B844 have big heavy alternators.  (I removed the B8 alternator, and indeed it is heavy, i'd say at least 10+lbs)

I think the T5 is a winner because the basic motor  so common for so many years.

I weighed one of my rotaries, a Rx8 motor (13b renesis), 'longblock' with flywheel, no intake or exhaust, no front accessories, came in at 200lbs.

Just for fun the Datsun/Nissan A12 in my 1200 is 183lbs; this is with Keihin flat slide carbs (they wiegh almost nothing) and header. That weight is complete with starter, oil, flywheel and clutch pack. This motor is mildy tuned (it's essentially a street motor with a ported head & 39mm Kehin carbs) and makes 80whp. The motor would be totally streetable

The A15 motor in the same trim weighs just 12lbs more. The tune on the 1500 is the same as above with the addition of slightly larger valves and more aggressive cam and it made 99.8whp. This motor while streetable but you would know it's been modified as the idle is a bit lumpy.

As for fuel mileage I only know the ontrack mileage; 13 mpg for the 1200 & 9 mpg for the 1500. I wonder what kind of fuel mileage a Yaris (same motor as Prius) gets on track?

The 4 speed tranny weighs 38lbs & the 5 speed weighs 54lbs.

I was suprised by the weight of the Volvo T5 as that as light or lighter than some of the turbo 4 cylinder cars.

I weighed the Volvo 6-speed automatic TF80S that is used with the V8, without TC (still stuck on engine)  it was only 195 lbs.

That thing is so compact it is crazy, which allows the T6 to fit transverse into the volvos.  If you are not familiar it uses

Ravigneaux planetary which doubles the gears in the same space.

It really has me thinking about using this transaxle.

I weighed another motor today:

All the Tesla fans have to admit mine is bigger.

It broke the scale at over capacity of 580lbs (found it online), and scale only rated to 550lbs, and now it is broken.  :(

Not going to be able to weigh anything again for a little while.
