Right now I run 195/50/15s on 15x7s. I want more width and was planning on 225/45/15s on 15x8s.

The problem with that size is that there are only 3 Extreme Performance Summer tires and a bunch of R-comps for it. I'm worried that the only streetable tires in that size could go out of production. Are there any 16" or 17" tires I should consider?

Requirements:

  • 225~245 width (squeezing 225s on is hard enough though)
  • Good selection of XPS tires; MPS, UHPS and R-comps a bonus
  • Overall diameter close to 185/65/14
  • Will fit with very little to no stretch on an 8.5" or narrower wheel

Doing a little digging myself it looks like 245/40/17 has an awesome selection of tires...but that's pushing both the diameter and width pretty high, which is not only a gearing and speedo concern but is likely to make my tires chew up my fenders in a hard corner.

Any other suggestions?

I'm going to make cardboard templates to check clearance for the "finalist" sizes.

There are no 16s. Strike that thought right now.

The 225/45-15 is healthy. There's been MORE tires added to it recently. I'd just run that. The Miata crew will never let those go completely away.

What car and what are u driving for? I personally hate anything over 215 on a 7 inch rim, they feel too squiggly

It's an AE92 Corolla that's getting GT-S'd.

Yeah the getting GT-S'd part doesn't affect tire fitment though (other than the inability to fit 13s over the disc brakes). Anything wider than 195 already requires wild mods so you can throw stock fitment concerns out the window.

I'd be running anything 225 or wider on an 8" or 8.5" rim so I shouldn't face any "squiggliness."

Either a 205/50 on an 8" or a 225/45 on a 9".

As mentioned, these tires will continue thanks to Civic/Miata/E30 etc for Auto-X and track use.

Rim width over 8.5" is a total no-go. I thought about 205/50 on 8" but that amount of stretch makes me uneasy, I'd run them on 7" wide.

Doing a little more digging, 235/40/17 looks pretty good. I'll put that on the candidate list and scratch off 245/40/17 which is just too much diameter (and width...just a little too much of everything).

205/50 on an 8" wheel isn't stretched. People race on it all day, every day, they aren't rolling off.

Depends which tire exactly...some look OK, others look like you could stick 2 credit cards between the rim and the tire. I'm looking for a width increase to at least 225 so if I'm ever running 205s, it would be as a quick fix to not having tires available locally.

Well... any of the tires you're looking at won't look stretched.

Either way, if you're cool with running 225s on an 8, then you've got plenty of options.

I'm cool with those but I want to see if there's anything better to be sure I'm making the best choice...it's a Big Money decision for me. Cost of the new wheels will be doubled with import duty.

I say just stick with what's easily available. 205/50/15 is a blessing.
