Have I missed the boat with Fiat 500 exhausts? I'd never even considered them

End of thread.

Because of every douchebag Mustang owner around here, I vote no.  I did go the high school with a guy that drive a 66 fastback Mustang that sounded mighty good.  It had a hot cam and some form of open muffler, but he never showed out like the goober’s today do.

Still doesn't change the fact that a Fox body HO 5.0 has a  Glorious sound.

Uncorked BMW I6's sound really good.  Lots of cars out there for 5k or less.  Plenty of manuals too. Might be a bit needy, but the major issues are well known and lots of DIY info out there on them.

+ another vote for VR6's, they sound great.

I understand how unpopular this thought is, but I'm going throw it out there anyway.....

Most Mustangs and Camaros sound like pickup trucks to me.  For every ten that has a modified exhaust maybe one of them has something that sounds like proper muscle.

94-95 Mustang GT for the 302.  Hooker Aerochambers in a custom cat-back behind a Magnaflow Stainless 49-state catted x-pipe.  B303 cam.  Maybe an open-element air filter in some kind of box to keep the heat away from the inlet.  Car + exhaust + cam for maybe $3k, rest of it spent on whatever maintenance is needed (because it will).

I keep my ‘01 Mustang GT (2V, quiet Flowmasters) around for the sound. Someday I want  to find an off-road H-pipe and throw on the Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust that’s in the basement.

I’m partial to 6 cylinders.  My vote is a straight piped E36 or Boxster.

The former will be a better $5k car than the latter.

Lexus LS400s make some pretty glorious noise with the mufflers removed. Also, I'm really partial to Honda J-series V6s, they have a great scream to them, so V6 5-speed Accord coupe as my other choice.

Roadkill Chevy Muscle Truck

Mostly stock LS6 (aftermarket cam) mid-length headers, 3" exhaust into a 4" Dynomax Bullet muffler.

Not going to win sexiest overall, but Z32s (both NA and Turbo) have a great exhaust note when the exhaust is opened up IMO.

But holy E36 M3, talk about douchebags:

This thread encouraged me to take my '90 Infiniti Q45 out for a solid thrashing this morning.  I haven't driven it in months.  It still has old RE71s mounted and this morning's 34 degree temps made for some fun starts given that the tires had such little grip.

No mention of a KLZE? Odd omission for this place. Id vote anything firing pistons at 8000rpm. Not sure what $5000 hoopties can manage that more than once or twice. I quite like my Lima with it's sainted muffler 3/4 throttle at 3800rpm. I am a plain vanilla guy though so take that for what it's worth.

Are we talking 5k all in or 5k in car purchase alone? If car only, I have to throw my hat in for Jaguar v12.

The Ford 5.0 is special because it can produce a sound that you feel in your chest, without blowing your eardrums out. It also sounds just as good (or better) at idle as it does at full send. I can't think of a sound I'd rather buy for 5k.

I'll throw out there that I often like sounds an engine makes in conditions other than open throttle. Case in point: My 4.3 S10. Single Blowmaster 40, no cat, stock intake/tune. Run it to 4500 and snap the trhottle shut in gear, glorious. Or the popping and sputtering from my 2.3 between shifts. Fantastic stuff. Even my old boost bug that had "too much" cam just idling was really good.

Another VR6 vote here.  But get the big one, the 3.6 in B6 generation Passat is my daily driver and the noises it makes are just cool.  Simple "suitcase resonator" delete is all it takes to get the good noises.

Last time I autocrossed it, I had dozens of people tell me my car sounded the best on course.

My first car was an 850,  n/a with a 5 speed. About 6 months in, the exhaust rusted out and fell off just aft of the cat, which 17 year old Furious thought was the most awesomest thing ever and therefore refused to fix. I probably have permanent hearing damage from that car.

My vote is Roadkill Muscle Truck clone. Generally I think the Ford V8s sound better, whether old school SBF, 2/3/4 valve mod motor, or Coyote, but something about the setup on that truck just tickles me like nothing else. The music of my people.
