I'll throw out there that I often like sounds an engine makes in conditions other than open throttle. Case in point: My 4.3 S10. Single Blowmaster 40, no cat, stock intake/tune. Run it to 4500 and snap the trhottle shut in gear, glorious. Or the popping and sputtering from my 2.3 between shifts. Fantastic stuff. Even my old boost bug that had "too much" cam just idling was really good.
To each his own, but to my ear the 90 degree 4.3 V6 easily tops my worst sounding list.
Dodge Challenger V8. Stock exhaust sounds great so modding it probably sounds better.

Ford 5.0 with Flowmasters is the only correct answer.
End of thread.
There are no wrong answers when it comes to matters of opinion, except for this.
Being helpful to the thread, I deliberately left certain cars un-edited out of some of my DRSCCA rallycross videos because they just sound so good.
Porsche 911 is in all reality outside of a $5k budget, but artur1808's M50-swappd E30 sounds really kick-ass and could be done under budget.

Boxster can be had for <5k and it sounds like a 911.

No mention of a KLZE? Odd omission for this place.
Someone on page 1 said tiny V6 from MX3 which is same KL family. I came here to say 2nd gen Probe GT with broken b-pipe. I drove mine that way for 2.5 years and I wasn’t poor.
Probably pick this up cheap at a pawn shop.
Please forgive me.

I missed that. Oops. My mx6 gt was a great sounding thing. At some point it had been de-catted, but the muffler wasn't obnoxious. Still don't miss that car though.

MX-3 with the tiny V6?

I am running my KL MX3 with ChampCar at Laguna Seca, so will probably add another muffler, boo hoo.
Alfa V6, dijo..
I loved the way the Bitrouble sounded, too

That was the tow truck. It’s a common mistake with Bitroubles.
In reply to Furious_E :
The odd-fire 3.8 and the similar 225 Dauntless don’t sound very sexy.

Any liter bike! 12-14000rpms!
you can buy a dwarf car for $5k and it will have an R1 or GSXR 1000 engine. Definitely the best sound you can buy at that price.
Something with a 1UZ. X-pipes and a set of blitz nur spec r mufflers. Or/and itb's.

can't say I ever found the GSXR to have a good sound. Too high pitched and screaming

How is this even a question?
302 HO w/ your mid pipe of choice and muffler of choice. If you like it really loud with headers.
For me, that's a prochamber with 40 series and a set of LTs. That combo is universally loved by car enthusiasts and recognizable a mile away. The only cars IMO that sound better than that are the LFA, F355 a T51R turbo supra and a lot of other really expensive cars.
Someone mentioned bike - for under $5k - hands down the gear whine and rumble of the VFR800 (98-00)

They don't sound nearly as good as an aircooled. Something about the fan roar and the unmuffled combustion noise.
