X2 on the Suburban. I've had one on hand for nearly 25 years. My '01, bought new, has 315k on it and is perfect for all your needs. And it shrinks around you when you start rolling. At least, compared to the 7.3 crew cab dually f350 it does.
As a counterpoint, I will point out that, comparing year-to-year, an Expedition EL is generally cheaper than a Suburban. The tow rating is higher, it rides and handles better due to IRS, it has a lower rear load floor thanks to the same IRS, both the second and third rows fold flat without needing to be removed, and the 5.4L doesn't have the AFM issues that the LS motors in the Suburbans do. Though, depending on the year, you might have fun getting the spark plugs out. And from 2015-up, they have the 3.5L Ecoboost and it's wonderful mountain of torque.
You think ford will put the upcoming v6 turbo diesel in the expedition?

I'll be listing our 08 GX470 soon. Just have not gotten pics. It hauled the hell out of a ESP prepped 06 Mustang on a metal bed trailer to nats the other year.
Where are you? I'm looking for one.
They stopped making the 4Runner V8 in 09 and it is tough to find a 4wd without a ton of miles on it and an eye-crossing price tag. GX470's are pretty thick on the ground with low miles, though, since the soccer moms seem to like them. You get a lot more bells and whistles with them for not a lot more money than the V8 4Runner. Towing capacity is 500 lbs less, but still a respectable 6500.
He's in Texas (I bought some CC plates from him for my old Mustang - good guy).

Thanks. Turns out he is in the same suburb of Houston I am! We're in touch...
Bringing this back as E36 M3 is getting real. I test drove a few vehicles:
-2010 Sequoia. Really nice one owner. I like just about everything except the front seats are not great, and the cargo room behind the third row is no better than on the mid size suv's. This one has the second row buckets so accessing the third row is easy.
-2013 Expedition. Also a one owner, and pretty clean. Crap. Felt like I couldn't see anything close to the truck (think parking lot nightmare for MrsAK). Didn't accelerate, brake or turn as well as the Sequoia. Getting to the third row required a masters degree in geometry and zen like patience.
-2014 Pilot. Wow, nice vehicle. Drives more like a car but with good space. Mechanism to move the second row for access to the third row is easy and can be done with one hand.
-2014 Explorer. Driven back to back with the Pilot, I don't know why anyone would spend their own money on the Explorer. I can't find one thing about it that I liked better than the Pilot. Accessing the third row here is the same story as the Expedition.
This weekend I spent a couple hours in my BIL's Yukon XL, which I think it a 2011. Good ride, not quite as firm as the Sequoia, which could be good or bad.
At the moment I'm leaning toward the Sequoia, but the Suburban/Yukon XL are still in the running. I think my wife's preference would be a Pilot, but the Sequoia gives a lot more towing capacity and cargo space, at least with the third row folded down. .
My 2010 Expedition Limited has second row captains chairs so the little ones can walk their butts to the 3rd row by themselves.
I have the short one, not the EL and it's my wife's full time ride. She never has a problem parking it and she only has one good eye (no joke).
We pull our open bow speed boat to several different lakes over the summer and the only downside to this rig has been the so-so gas mileage.
I think they are cheap because the 5.4L 3V motor is sort of problematic. I've replaced all my rocker arms, rocker arm tensioners (they look like little pushrods) and front timing chain & tensioners at about 130,000 miles.
If I had to do it all over, I'd go for a newer Pilot with second row captains chairs if they are available. It keeps the second row passengers from fighting with each other. Sort of.
Tahoe or Yukon not XL might be worth considering. Similar size as the Sequoia (1.5 feet shorter than Suburban/Yukon XL) but can be found with lower mileage for 1/2 to 2/3 of the price of a Sequoia. Also the Lexus GX470 can sometimes be found for less than the Sequoia.
