We're on page 3 and no one has said V70?  Specifically V70R.

Won't meet height vs/ track width, but yes these things are awesome.  But also weird.  I recall reading something like the brake booster is still on the passenger side and there is a goofy linkage connection the DR brake pedal to the booster.

I love the concept of a 10 second AWD box thingy DD like that.  Would need a backup car (or truck) though.

Are these manual?  I don't see any V70 manual wagons for sale nationwide.

V50 looks to be more the right size for me.  V70s are very long.  

Whats the low down on V50 T5 manual wagons?  I only see AWD models in my search, is that they only way they came?  Same drivetrain as the S60R?

I am specifically in the market for a Volvo wagon right now so I can comment a bit.

There are manual V70R wagons, manual V70 T5 wagons, and manual V70 2.4 wagons; the turbo models are desirable though and manual V70s in general were not made in high numbers so they are hard to come by. There are a few dozen for sale right now, but you need to look in marque-specific places like Swedespeed.

Manual V50 T5s were available both FWD and AWD. Broadly speaking, unless AWD is a necessity, the AWD Volvos are worth avoiding. They are a bitch to work on, and for the AWD V50s, a fair number of parts are dealer-only if they are not NLA entirely.

V50s in general are pretty good cars (more or less a Ford Focus with a nicer interior and an inline five) but they are known for a few stupid problems; for example the heater core o-rings fail and dump coolant all over the CANBUS modules, the sunroof drains fall apart and fill the floor pan with 4" of water, etc. They were one of the first Volvos with heavy Ford influence and it shows in a lot of areas.

The 296HP S60R/V70R drivetrain was only used in those models. The 256HP T5 drivetrain is broadly similar at its core, but not the same.

Personally I'm looking for the most stripped-down FWD 850, V50, or V70 I can find, with preference going to the NA and LPT cars. The high pressure turbo cars seem to be much more subject to previous owner abuse when they come around and the higher running costs don't appeal to me.

Really, they aren't that boxy.  A bunch more boxy* than a 318ti and a few of the other suggestions so far though :)

*Note, I mean box-shaped utility section - rear seats to back of car.

I love my V60, but man I wish it had that roofline.

That being said, I saw a really nice V70R the other night, looked stock, in that platinum color.  No idea about the transmission, though.

Yeah I should have been more clear.  There is boxy styling, and there are boxy cargo areas

Are we looking for 5dr hatchback or looking more wagon? As an example,  Audi A3 5dr or Golf Sportswagon? Same basic platform, but slightly different packaging.

I also dug up that first gen Tiguans were available as a manual.  I wonder if some of the VW golf/gti suspension (TTRS?) stuff swaps under them... I mean all the VAG stuff is a huge parts bin, right?

Also, I kind of view this thread as "how do I easily deal with the impending CUVification/Carpocalypse?" of the self-transportation sector in the US.

or, said another way:  If all we can buy in the future are CUV's... how do we GRM-style partswap them so they work the way we want them to work?

I believe you can swap a good portion of suspension parts on vehicles that share the same platform.
