Well i spoke with the owner and he seems to be a heck of a motivated seller hence the price. Or something is wrong with it even though he mentions in the add that everything is in working order. I like the idea of it and may go see it friday when he is available.
Will a 3SGTE/5spd swap work in that car and still be able to reatin awd??

How did THAT come up in this thread?
It is NOT a 4 cyl, it is NOT easy to find parts, it is NOT good on gas, it is probably NOT in his price range, and it is definitely NOT slow. Easy car to get into trouble with.
My son lost his license doing 94 in a 55 in mine (without knowing it).
But, if you insist, I've got a sweet 5 spd SVX I'll sell- and throw in a parts car!
lol you just talked me out of it!

It'll work, yes.
But if you're going to go that route, start with a Camry AllTrac.
Or if you want to get REAL silly, a RAV4.
With the Corolla, you're looking at the A-series engines. 4age, 4age 20v, 7afe, "7age" etc etc etc.

There was about $3850 invested, including the car. I hate to get rid of it but I'm looking for a Subaru. It would go well with your red hatch.
Crap. Thats a good looking little car. Whereabouts in OH are you located?
About 45 minutes north of Columbus.

Hahaha... If I buy that car I feel like the "appliance car" principle might end up getting thrown out the window....
Wouldnt it be more fun in the corolla though due to its lower weight compared to that of the Camry?
I doubt I would go 4A, 16 or 20V... Not enough torques...
Fletch's CRX seems like a catch too... hmmm....

What kind of condition is it in under the skin? rust an issue? how many miles does it have?
In reply to cxhb:
I have an ad on Columbus craigslist. Underneath is great, I've had it on a rack. The right side door is bad and the right quarter is not the greatest. I've come close to getting a red door for cheap, but too far away. It has 181,000, no engine light on or leaks. Pulls very strong. I may store it in my dad's garage for the winter if i don't sell it. I can't make my mind up if I want to keep it or sell and try a Subaru for winter driving. It appears to have never been hacked on or been in an accident. I do have a BMV report and Carfax, for whatever they are worth. I can get over 35 mpg still driving it easy. Interior is excellent.

One with a broken trans will fall into his price range, 5 speed swap, combined with a full service should put it right in the ball park. Besides his question was would I buy for 2k. I've always wanted one for a daily.

Its not a 325i sadly... but what say you about this?
1985 BMW 318I
Seems like its a little too old possibly... mileage isnt posted, at least (with the exception of the fender) it looks relatively straight.

According to the BMV report, the first owner had it until 119,000, then the second to 176,000. My brother then bought it last year off the second owner. I bought it off him I think in January of this year. So I haven't had it long. And again, I'm in no hurry to sell. I love it, but thanks to websites like this, I get an itch for something new...like a Subaru. I won't be able to type the rest of the day. I'll return tomorrow.
for $2k, you could get 3 or 4 Cavaliers..

I don't think the weight would be THAT different, and the weight difference would be more than made up by the fact that getting a 3sgte in a Corolla is a pain in the ass. All custom mounts, the wiring will be a nightmare, good luck finding axles/hubs that work, etc etc etc.
Camry is much closer to plug and play, due to the motor it had from factory.
Honestly, i think a Corolla AllTrac would be easy to keep as an appliance. But also keep in mind that $2000 buys you a lot more Corolla NON AllTrac than it does Corolla AllTrac.
The one I have- a 2000 Saturn SL2. Honda reliability, Chevy ease-of-repair, parts cost, and resale value (or lack thereof).

Ermmm.... that has the 1.9 DOHC, right?
I would have a hard time counting on my fingers the cars that i find to be MORE of a pain in the ass to work on than that.
You need this.. SAAB goodness Parts are cheap, it's safe, fast, comfortable and in my opinion good looking.

Mazda 626. The early '90s model with the 2.2. Not completely devoid of soul, and the engine is a bit of a gem. Basic, but quite torquey.
You can't go far wrong with an old BMW or Saab, though, as suggested. Generally speaking, they were tough, ("built to last"), and have plenty of enthusiast support.

If you can bend on the 4-banger only rule, you can get a 2nd gen MX6 LS/2nd gen Probe GT V6 for peanuts, and it's a TON of car for the money. Great power, handle well, reliable, and the gas mileage is still pretty good.
Integras are almost impossible to find around here...
Escorts are a possibility but a couple of friends had very little luck with them and they were bone stock...
Neon is an interesting thought as they seem to be all over. Kinda scare me though. They just feel like they aren't worth half of what people ask for them. How is the maintenance?
I like the idea of a celica... Ill keep an eye out...
For DD duty, you might want to take this into consideration.

I am just going to throw this out there...how about a late 80's early 90's ranger/s-10...They are dirt cheap around here...for 2k you could probably find a Nissan hard body...My old 85 ranger was definitely an appliance with the 2.3 and the 5 speed but it reliably returned 28mpg for 200k miles!
I will also second the escort gt...the drive-train is bulit proof, the rest of the car is ok, I dont think any of my accessories worked when I first got mine...but it was $500 bucks and had been rolled over twice!
Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon? Can't have mine though. I really like mine, only problem is I can only seem to get 20mpg at best. It's dead reliable, well built, and hauls a bunch of stuff.
AW11 MR2s aren't that small. I'm not much shorter than you and fit in my old one just fine.
I do love me some CRX, been missing mine lately.
Wait, i know! Buy the 85 GTI i have listed in the classifieds for $1K. Fix what little problems it has and still have like $500 left over.

25.5 last highway trip with the recharged A/C on full blast. Kids and luggage.
