OK, I know you're thinking LSx?
No.
I want the bare minimum of hassle swap. The car in question is a 2005 Crown Vic. Lets assume the engine really is junk.
What will fit? I've had some luck searching CL for Vic and Marquis engines, but what else works? Trucks? Thunderbirds? Mustangs? What to avoid?
Splicing wires and re-routing electrons scares me. I want as close to plug and play as possible.
As a side question, what should I expect to pay for a Mustang 4.6/T-45 trans combo? One that works with said Crown Vic?
a 5.4 is said to be an almost direct swap...
but honestly, i'd probably put a carbureted 460 in one to minimize the need for magical electrons... but i'm weird...
Easiest solution is to repair/replace the engine already in the car, unless of course, the engine bay is empty.
Junkyard 4.6 plus blower seems obvious. It's just a mod motor, I think all the SOHC versions are pretty close.

this is the GRM forum where small engines rule, so i'll be the one to suggest the turbo 2.3/T5 combo from the Thunderbird Turbocoupe...
or a rotary out of an RX7..
The biggest reason for plug and play is the car is at my brother's 1200 miles away in Montana. If I have him do anything, it needs to be nearly plug and play.
Of course a 2005 Vic/Marquis engine will work, but what about a 2003? A 99? Will the connectors be the same?
I would think any P.I. 4.6 2-valve longblock will go in without modification.
If you decide to go 5.4 there's a few of us here that can walk you (him?) through the process.
The supercharged motor from the F150 SVT drops right in with only a pulley swap, and the motor is on sale at right now for $150. I'm pulling your leg of course, but wouldn't that be awesome!
Seriously, you have the room, so why not go big?

IIRC, the Harley Davidson Editions for the model years 2002 and 2003 had the supercharged 5.4 too.
Any P.I. 4.6 should be a pretty simple affair.
If you're looking at Mustang Donors You want a '99 to '04 "New Edge" car.
Any 05 and up crown Vic/marquee 4.6 should be plug and play. That's the year they went DBW though so lots of magical electrons.
