It's very local, and very tempting...
Tuned VW 1.8 Turbo and Passat transaxle.
Someone on this board, "okieflyr," has one with just such a swap that I badly want to see featured in the magazine.

That said, I once saw a 914 at a car show in Germany that had a 928 engine in it (!)
I have a customer in South America with a turbo Audi 5 cylinder. he claims something like 32 PSI, and crazy amounts of power.
Going to look at this thing tomorrow, any particular things to watch out for? I mean as long as it's pretty solid, it's a stripped rolling chassis, what could there be to watch out for....
Rust - below battery tray and chassis rails. Check door gaps if they change when you sit in it. For engine a scooby or staying p car a 3.2 with a g50, but it's not a cheap conversion
Maybe you already looked at the car, but:
For rust, also shine a flashlight up the wheel wells toward the cockpit (the rear of the front wells and the front of the rear wells). Also look at the front corners of the engine bay. This correlates with the rear corners of the cockpit; that is easier to see but only shows you half the story.

IF, IF, I had ton's of money and this car as a "blank slate" so to speak, I'd go with a Porsche flat 6...building a 914-6 lookalike. Renegade, if they are still in business, offers / offered? a kit for transplanting a GM 6 cylinder or a V8 into this car. If the money was there, it would be foolish NOT to go the V8 route. A company called Beach Boys, in Ca. obviously, used to offer a convertible "conversion" for the 914. You chop off the targa "loop" which isn't really structural, and add a folding top.
Again, all the above is contingent on the money being there to be "thrown away" on a play car.
Ok, so I did already go look at the car. There seems to be a very small amount of bubble-age in a couple corners but really looked pretty solid. There has obviously been some amatuer bodywork done to add the flares, but the car was very complete other than the lack of engine/trans....even has the CV shafts in the trunk. Current owner worked at the porsche shop that did some of the work originally on the car and knows its history extensively.
...So I bought it for $500. Going with a trailer to grab it this week. Will try and find either an actual 914 tranny or a vee dub with a flipped ring gear for a more cheaper-er approach. Leaning towards a scooby boxer motor. $2010 Challenge here we come!

I have a Kennedy kit for installing a GM 60* v-6 in a VW, clutch and all, would make for some fun hoonage...
I'd certainly consider parting with it.
