I found a 2004 X type. It has the 3.0l motor, AWD, leather sunroof / moon roof, and premium stereo. It is an auto and not a sport package. It has the leather premium interior. The car has 106K mile and appears to be in excellent shape. Literally it was owned by a old lady (I know who the owner was).
Now the bad it needs a transmission. I have found a trans for it for $800 with 37K on it guaranteed for 1 year.
What is a car like this worth? NADA sais something like 2K but that is a car needing repairs not a major system replaced. However in good working order in good shape retail is 5K +/- with a trade in of about $3200 in good shape
I really like the car. It would be a great car for me as a DD. The motor runs perfectly and looks to have been maintained very well. Tires are about 70 percent with even ware. No rust no clunks no dings. Paint is dirty but has a nice shine under the dirt / dust. No signs of any kind body work to it at all. As far as I can ell it looks to be a completely original un touched car. It would look virtually new if it was given a wash. Interior is dirty and there are signs of the previous owner having been a smoker but there is not damage or ware showing to any part of the interior and there is no discernible odder of smoking in the car.
I know these are notorious for trans failure and I have to do some homework as to if there is anything I can do to upgrade a replacement trans or if possibly augmenting the transmission cooling system is a possible area of improvement that would help with the transmission life.
What say you all as to the value of this car. I am thinking of making an offer of around 1700. And possibly doing a package deal with the new trans (I have to install it) for about $2400
$1700 seems high, $1k at most seems fair, or maybe less.
Non running equals scrap value. $500, max.
If everything else was perfect then $700-800. Drive a fixed one first. I though the same as you that it would be a good cruise but I found the drive horrible. As a flipper, they are slow movers.

Unfortunately, no one now wants to sell a non-running car for $500-$900 anymore.
For 2400 fixed, thats a lot of car.
On paper.

Just because the book says they're worth $5000 does not make it so.
When we were shopping for my wife's car a few years ago, I could have bought 2-year-old, 30k-mile X Types for under $10,000 all day long.

That is ALWAYS my answer. If they were worth more fixed, then why don't they fix them??
I would be getting it for me to drive. I have driven them and liked the ride. I here what you are saying re $500 for it but other than the trans it is like new. So $500 is not going to get it.
I offered 1000 today and they did not say no. If i get it great if not. Ohwell.
I already have a line on a xk8 in about the same condition and it also needs a trans. Just no 4wd and that was a big reason for my want for this x type. I also like the ride and how the x type drives better than the xk8 looks and style i dont have a prefrence. I do know that the trans in the xk8 atr a serious issue. I think they sre under designed for the power and torque of the 4l motor
I've driven them a little bit and liked the ride and handling during regular street driving. Might be fun to autox. You should check that out and report back if you get it
I've always liked jags but been terrified of the ownership costs.
The other thing is up here they are sellimg in the 4k to 8k range and awd comands a premium on top of that.
Again it is for me not a flip so i am not looking to make money. I really like this one and it is the first one i have found with the driveline, color and trim level that i want. And to top it off it is in fantastic condition except for the trans. This makes it very apealing.

For the most part this is a Lincoln LS so costs are not as bad as earlier ones or the more recent ones. It is kind of like a saabaru in that you are getting a car that looks kind of like a saab but is really 90 percent Subaru. This is another reason why i have liked these cars . I drove an LS for a while . Loved the ride and driving experence but they are just not atractive in my book. The interior was cheep and the exterior was an afterthought. The x tyie is the same car just with a better interior and an exterior i actually like
Hang on a sec: the X-type is based on the Ford Mondeo (descendant of the Contour/Mystique) platform. The one that's a twin to the LS is the S-type. Very different animal.

Maybe it's the phrasing, or just my reading, but I want to point out that the XK8 and the X are completely different and unrelated cars.
For me, all non-drivers are $500 cash cars. Just getting the damn things on the trailer keeps me cheap. But if you want to pay more, go for it. On the plus side, you can try your hand at rebuilding the tranny after you swap in the used one. On the negative side, you have all that 100k mile maintenance to do, and you are going to swap out tons of stuff "while you are in there". Mind you I have broken my rule only once, and I should have listened to myself on that one.

Yes Sorry I got my Jags mixed up. LOL
But even better if it is on the contour. Those are plentiful and thus parts should be rather easy to come by.
And yes I understand the difference between the X type and the XJ8 completely different cars.
X type
XJ8
I like them though!!! If I could I would have one of every Jag made in a large garage some place.

I ment XJ not XK I wish I had a lead on an XK.
In reply to dean1484:
What is wrong with the transmission? Does it slip when it tries to shift in to third or higher?
I believe the X type uses the same transmission as a few other vehicles. The Mazda MPV with the 3.0, the Range Rover Freelander, and Volkswagen Jetta to name a few. They suffer from a failed part that effectively causes reverse to try to engage at the same time as the higher gears, which burns up the reverse and high frictions. On the MPV at least, the parts can be replaced without removing the tranny, through the wheel well...
MPV Transmission Fix
I bought an MPV with the problem and fixed it with a days work for less them $300. The parts catalogs listed the same parts for the X-Type, so I think it may be similar.
In reply to Boost_Crazy: THANKS!!!!!!!! I am going to study that. I don't know the extent of the trans problem at the moment.
