I need a engine. 4 cylinders. Light weight. Simple enough to transplant into a boat. 125-175 hp.

I'm looking a Suzuki engines, but what else is out there. Weight is the biggie.

It also needs to survive extended runs in the 4000-5000 rpm range.

And cheap. I like cheap.

It would get mated up to this.

would the g13bb get you into that range or would you need something like the j18 from the sidekick sport.

Honda B series? Google says it's only 350lbs complete and with trans, so like 290 without.

edit: B not D, not enough power in the D series. Also, add weight for VTEC, but the cheap ones won't have VTEC.

what about motorcycle engines?

Expensive. Yamaha makes a complete setup using their 1000cc and 1200cc inline 4 cylinders. The engines, used go for $2000K and up. I'm thinking more along the lines of a $300 engine.

MR1 HO from 2004 to 2008 was 1L making 160HP at 10k rpm...

Cheap, light, powerful...pick two

Doesn't some of the Honda stuff turn backwards?

I like the idea of a 8500 rpm redline.

what about a g10t? it does iirc 75ish hp stock but can hold ridiculous amounts of boost.

This I know. That's a $3000+ ski around here, and at that price, beat hard.

I'm thinking more along the lines of sub $1K for the engine and pump and the pump is $250.

What operating rpm range do you want? Do you want that 125-175hp in the 4000-5000rpm range?

also iirc a g10t wet is very light as it is all aluminum

the issue is finding a turbo one though. I mean most are either g13a/b's or g10 non turbos with their 50hp

Wankel?

Not near the HP, but those mil surplus air cooled flat 4s that the air boat guys use, 4A084? They were in planes and gen sets, and various power units. They seem to motivate air boats well, not sure if the same principles apply to jet pumps?

Gearing and a little Kubota diesel? There's a Yanmar or similar little diesel in most of the refer trailers, a lot of scrap trailers to get little diesels from.

I could probably stand that to be in the peak areas at the top of the RPM range. Yamaha is getting 160 out of their 1L engines by spinning them 10K. Their newer stuff is coming with 1.8L engines. They are also burning a ton of fuel. 13+ gallons per hour.

I don't mind sacrificing some speed for economy and range.

The BMW M10 is supposed to be 83 kg (180 lbs) and is about as simple and reliable as you can get. They only make about 100 hp stock, but can be tuned to make more power without great expense.

With the engine prices, I boost a n/a one till it blows and back off a little.

Junky turbo setup on aforementioned 50hp G10? The whole lakewater cooling deal should help here.

Yeah, that would be a problem. The K series spins normally though, something like 350lbs complete.

the beauty is.. you are on a boat. You do not need to worry about NVH, Emissions, or even power band. You can take almost any small 4 cylinder and get into the range of power you want simply with the use of cams, porting, and proper carburation.

Boats are highly tolerant of poor drivability, simply because they move in a fluid environment that allows the prop (or pump) to slip instead of trying to supply power to a hard surface.

The bad news is.. you are on a boat. Engines on a boat take a serious beating and if you are in salt water and using raw water cooling, all that salt is going to eat the aluminum block and head

From a random post on a random Subaru forum that Google fetched for me.

EJ-22: 2,2 liter, 130 to 160 hp, about 120 kg(265lbs) dry weight
EJ-25: 2,5 liter, 165 to 200 hp, about 135 kg(298lbs) dry weight
