And just found out the big boat does have trailer brakes. Leaving the two 1500-2000lb boats without, but that is small enough that frankly I'm not going to worry about it. Especially since the heavier of the is towed at no faster than 25 MPH, for 3 miles, with no hills other than a boat ramp.

Actually, with trailer brakes you can easily get away with a really small truck. 1st get s10s are 65 inches wide or less, and the nissan would be fine too.

You might save the few hundred dollars you spend on trailer brakes in winter fuel saving every few years if you can get away with a smaller truck.

Yeah, I think at that level most ANY pickup shaped object in good mechanical condition will be fine.

Heck, you can probably tow with your miata, and get a skinny trailer for pickup bed duties.

I know you are talking about a submersible trailer here - there are marine grade electric trailer brakes available so you don't need to endure the awfulness that are surge brakes.

but I am fairly certain that my 72 GMC is narrower than the Dakota, and I'd rather a ratty classic than a Dakota

The one and only material thing i've ever inherited was a 1975 F150 ext cab 2wd 360/c6 that ran completely perfect, like clockwork. I figured i would keep it around for towing as it ran so damn well. It ended up being not enough better at it than the other stuff i had around to justify keeping it for that sole purpose, so i ended up trading it for an XJ cherokee plus cash. So it really depends on whether you plan to do other things with that vehicle than have it sit around waiting for something to pull, imo.

Also, don't tow with an XJ. I've tried it many times, and it's pretty bad.
