This was a unicorn that I couldn't get out of my head for a few years.

1980-81 Dodge Diplomat coupe (during the first two years of the "new" square M-body body style MoPar offered a rare wagon and a seldom seen coupe)-

The same year range LeBaron coupe has been haunting me, as well, with an overpriced one in Iowa tempting me this week.  (I know Duster would approve of the wheels)

Of course, this weird obsession with odd versions of the '80-89 M body led me to grabbing this odd California only 318/4bbl plastic-wooded single horned beauty from the west coast. (with our own Synthetic Blinker Fluid ably enabling me by going 10 hours out of his way to drag it home for me in the middle of winter)

The "special bodied" cars really are special. How about two from Volvo and Bertone:

Ford Pinto ESS.

Most people don't even know they exist but it was a more performance oriented version. Very mild but better than the standard version.

I've owned lots of unicorns. Where do you set the boundary for rare?

I've owned or still own car models (not talking combinations of colour and options, but car models) that were made in total production of:  70, 100, 250, 288, 521, 1266, 1788, 1815.

Where do you draw the line as to which is a unicorn.

I'm partial to the S80 V8.  The European Ford platform, adapted into an understated Volvo body, with that glorious Yamaha V8.  No one expects a sound like that out of a car as nondescript as the S80.

In reply to David S. Wallens :

I almost bought a mid- '80s Panther Platform LTD coupe when I was pining for large two door unicorns.

But being a MoPar Guy, I try my best to shy away from anything that would lead me to hoarding different brand parts in my storage.

The local PA State Police barracks used one of those as an un-marked interceptor.  I worked at a gas station back in the mid-80's and once in awhile the unmarked cruisers would stop for gas. It was strange seeing an otherwise bland gold Citation with all of the police gear inside.

2001 GMC Sierra C3 - one year only, before the Denali name came around. Extended cab only, no regular cab, no crew cab, no dually. No rear steer, that came out in '02 with the Denali.

6.0L (LS), full-time AWD, four wheel discs, leather, full center console, power everything, all the bells and whistles (for 2001, anyway). Basically a 3/4 ton drivetrain with a 1/2 ton body, and a Cadillac-ish interior. Mechanically similiar to the Chevy Silverado SS of a few years later.

I've owned mine for over 16 years, almost 200K on it, added a supercharger, lowered it a little. Daily drove it, towed with it, hauled with it, now it's retired and rests in the garage, use it every now and then for hauling.

I'm eating lunch and reading this in my Ralliart wagon. 2004 only. Reliable daily driver since 2009, just rolled over 160,000 miles a few days ago.

edit: Mitsubishi Lancer.

Can't remember the last time I saw a regular front-drive, Toyota-built Nova, but back in the day, it was popular car at school--several friends drove them.

So how about the Twin Cam Nova?

I always like seeing the Subaru Outback sedans. They aren't super rare (says the guy living in the PNW) but still fun to see.

How about a Cosworth Vega, preferably a '76 with a five-speed and in a color other than black?

Not rare enough?

How about an A38 Police Pursuit Package Valiant with the E58 (5.9L) engine option?
