We have an Asuna Sunfire circle track car. For those not in the know, it is a badge engineered Isuzu Impulse, or a Geo Storm GSi. There were three engine choices: 1.6 SOHC, 1.6 DOHC and 1.8 DOHC. The last is ours and made 140 hp. It was a really competitive car because its light, has an incredibly adjustable suspension, and made good power. The trouble is that the engine suffers from oiling issues, and we cooked three of them last year. If there were lots of these cars around, we could just find another engine and drop it in, but they are becoming as rare as hens teeth. We have moved on to other race cars, but its sitting there ready to go if we had a motor, and I thought we could use it in the mini stock class. That would allow us to drop in a non original engine. I can make the arguement that since its a GM product, I can use any engine from a Chevrolet, GMC, or Isuzu. So I'm looking for suggestions. To make things easier, the transmission is the same as the Cavalier and probably others. The requirements are: CARBURETED ENGINES Four cylinder engines. No DOHC engines. B. Must be same manufacturer as the body, i.e. Toyota-to-Toyota, Honda to Honda. If an engine swap is being made to any existing (2009 and earlier) car you must provide Tech. with all technical information on the new engine and you MUST receive approval from Tech. BEFORE the swap is made. C. Maximum displacement 2300 cubic centimeters. D. Maximum .040 inch overbore. E. Balancing of engines and lightening of flywheel is allowed. F. Power to electric pumps must be interrupted when the ignition is turned off. A Hobbs type switch is required. G. Any reground camshaft allowed. H. No high compression pistons allowed. I. No stroking, de-stroking or de-tuning of engines allowed. J. No mixing of 2.3 and 2.5 Ford engine parts
FUEL INJECTED ENGINES A. Four cylinder SOHC or DOHC engines. B. Maximum displacement 2300 cubic centimeters. C. Maximum 165 horsepower (Factory advertised rating). D. Maximum .040 inch overbore. E. Engine must remain stock for make, model and year of car used. F. Electronic engine controls (computer, rev limiter, etc.) are to remain stock for make, model and year of car used. G. Power to electric fuel pumps must be interrupted when the ignition is turned off. A Hobbs type switch is required. H. Factory air induction systems to remain stock. A restrictor type plate may be required to ensure a fair level of performance with non-injected cars. I. One air duct allowed. J. No turbo chargers.
