Hey guys,

I need to try to get the Exocet packaged up, it's been driving me nuts. I would rather err on the side of too quiet than too loud for now.

http://exomotive.com/store/exocet-full-header-back-exhaust-nb/

Does anyone know what muffler that is? I'd like the dual exit, but really don't care too much. Any pro-tips for getting the exhaust tucked in ? My first iteration hung down way too low (and was absurdly loud), I'm starting over and trying to do it right this time so we'll see.

Well it's a Magnaflow, that's all I can see, and probably all anyone outside of Exomotive could tell...they do make good mufflers though.

If you want it to be quiet, use a "Turbo" (chambered) type muffler. Any kind of straight-through glasspack will be on the loud side.

Yeah - I figured I'd poll the collective (maybe someone had ordered the exhaust and had the part number). I'll email Exomotive and report back.

Looks like one for a v6 crammit.

I think Enthusa makes the exhausts for Exomotive.

Picking a muffler is surprisingly difficult. Summit Racing has a great website that lets you identify the shape of the case, the size/number of inlets and outlets, etc so that'll get you something that fits, but none of them post sound attenuation numbers.

So ignorant question #12312 of the day. If you have a muffler where it was designed to join a V set of runners into one, you can just run into 1 port and the other two will be muffled? I.e. the chambers aren't joined on one end? I guess that kinda answers my own question, it depends on internal design...

Do you mean a single inlet and dual outlets?

In reply to Keith Tanner :

The one on the exomotive website has the inlet going into the side with two ports, I assumed that was a collector (i.e. the engine side of things)? Are mufflers directional? (lol - I'm clueless)

It's all about how the muffler is designed internally. The muffler manufacturer will tell you which one(s) is/are the inlet and outlet.

With straight through setups like Magnaflows, there's not much restriction, so run as much muffler if you can fit.  Including running a muffler feeding into another muffler to cut more noise.  Ideally, make the 2 mufflers different sizes.

I put a "vortex cone" in my MG's collectors. Combined with a pair of traditional mufflers (it's a dual system), it made the LS1 distressingly quiet. This only really works if you're building the headers, though.

Mufflers can be directional. I had an exhaust shop put a single-in, dual-out muffler on my truck backwards and it sounded so dumb.

"I would rather err on the side of too quiet than too loud for now." and "Magnaflow" are not statements generally used together.

Walker Dynomax Super turbo is my go-to.  Stainless if its going to be used in competition- the regular ones vibrate apart internally if they are being used in a proper fashion.  At least, My 7400rpm twincam Neon roadracer could buzz them apart in a year or two.

I guess I should be more specific, I need to on the quiet side of "race-car" since that's all I'm going to do with it. i.e. need to make sound at some tracks, it can be loud. I don't care much about sounding stupid or what have you, I just want to go in circles with minimal drama. It's the reason I got the exocet. I think I'm going to try and run a single out magnaflow or knockoff, see how loud it is, put a super-trapp on it if it is too loud? This has been, hilariously, the most annoying part of setting up this car so far.

I'm full of terrible advice, but I think you should get one of those mufflers with the spinny bit in the middle that also connects to a spinny bit on your intake.

If you need to make sound then a turbo style with the longest body you can fit. Open cars like exocet's and Atoms seem to register louder on the meter then they look. Also tuck the exhaust out the rear or under the car a bit to keep it off the meters.

I want to, so so bad. But I want to shake down and reliability is my number 1 priority right now. So I'm avoid the spinny go faster box thingy

Waterford Hills race track has tough sound level requirements. I could always make the sound checks using a Flowmaster.

In reply to wearymicrobe :

Gotcha, the primary issue has been it's very tight under there.

Let's shift gears, anyone have exhaust routing pictures from an Exocet? I'm digging through the build forums now.

If you are over the limit you can do what we call a LS exhaust extension out here. Something easy to remove when you are on the street, best of both worlds.

Heh, I ran at Laguna a few times, plenty of Laguna Bends - usually capped with Super Trapps on the rotary engines. Good idea though.

If it works. I have to go on unrestricted days and those are few and far between. I have no space left for mufflers on my car and the exhaust exits behind the door.

This is what turbos are for.  Turns all that sound-limit-busting noise into extra horsepower. :)

That's the trick of the "Camaro" style muffler...It's a 1 in/2 out muffler, but unconventionally puts the outlets on opposite sides.
