Me too, I don't really care what other people think about what car I'm driving but I can't convince myself to buy a boring car even if it's probably more reliable. I drove an 87 Milano for several years so i think the cars I have now are an improvement. I'm mostly just annoyed because I wanted to swap the engine in the Subaru now its going to take a couple months to get the Mercedes fixed. I did think about getting another w126, I'm not sure the diesel ones are fast enough to merge onto the freeway safely anymore though.

Yeah, if you can't get an om617 to start then either the battery or starter is dead or you lost the keys.

The one I had always ran, I did have to replace the injection pump (something was wrong with the governor so it would not return to idle properly) but that's it. It also had 450k miles on it at least. Maybe I should get another one.

One of my favorite engines. I just sold my 4speed manual 240d on Saturday. It had an om617, 4spd, vnt turbo, and a2w intercooler. Only time it wouldn't start was because the starter.

You sound like a candidate for a Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost.

You like quirky engines and probably think about fuel economy. I know that Imperial Ford has ine discounted down below twelve grand.

I have considered the 1.0 Ford, they are really strange to drive though, and are banned from autocross if I ever wanted to do that. I have thought about getting another om617 Mercedes too, although they can be hard to drive in any kind of traffic cause of how slow they are. Definitely more reliable than the one I have now though, and quite a bit simpler, and quite cheap here. I could probably sell the e300d I have now for enough to buy 3-4 of them if I felt like it.

Where do you live?

I live in northern CA. There are numerous w126 diesels for $1500 on craigslist here. Since I sold the one I had there have been metering lights installed on many of the freeway on ramps I have to use, so that's part of why it might be hard to drive one now. I had to be going 35 mph by where the metering lights are now to merge onto the freeway at a reasonable speed. I once got chased by an angry redneck through the downtown area and I was glad I was driving a faster car then also. Nothing bad ever happened because of it being too slow when I was driving it though so maybe it wasn't as bad as I remember.

Renting a car is possible too, but yeah I may sell the Mercedes because it's too expensive of a car (as in what I could sell it for) to end up sitting in my driveway for weeks. I used to have a w126 and that was far easier to work on (and actually more reliable even with double the miles).

The Versa is a hateful little car with little to no soul. Which is exactly why I bought one. Bought it new because I could get a new car for under $11K and I just needed something that would work. It does what I need it to do and it's cheap on insurance/gas/payment. Plus I can literally put my entire detailing business in the trunk and still have a backseat.

It's a good thing we don't live closer to each other! I'm trying to thin the herd, but that one would have been hard to resist.

Haha yeah we would be swapping cars back and forth. The buyer was all giggles when he test drove it. He will be rally crossing it. I'll have him join the forum he would fit in well here.
