It's time to get the mr2 up and going again I need new tires for the stock wheels and wanted to get something for e stock auto-x and occasional street use until I puck up some 17 in wheels and tires for the street. Any suggestions? I know the stock tire sizes are hard to come by on 14 in wheels.
is Toyo R888 too focused for your use?
I'd see if I could find a set of 15" stock wheels, that might help (albeit only a little).
I run BFG Rivals on my Turbo, IIRC I had to downsize the rear from 225/50/15 to 225/45/15 at the rear and it took/takes 205/50/15 on the front wheels.
Even if 14" is stock size, you can go up an inch in diameter and still be legal in stock, has to be same width. I think the offset has to be the same, or about the same, you would have to check that.

If I come across a cheap set of 1993 wheels, I plan on picking them up, but not looking to spend money on a third set of wheels. If it comes down to that, I am putting on 17s and my trd springs and letting then class me as they will.
What's the stock size? Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs are available in 185/60r14
I believe 195/60r14 (front) and 205/60r14 rear.
If you are sticking with 14" wheels your only somewhat competitive option is the Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs.

This is a good tire.
use the allowance to go up to the 15" and run the 195 front and 225 rear tires in whatever flavor you like.
I'm wondering if 175/70r14 tires can be substituted for the 205/60r14 as the tire calculator shows that diameter should be about equal and it appears to have more variety.

That tire is only for Street Prepared and up classes.
Federal 595? Pretty sure it comes in those sizes.
The shaved yokohama was the tire of choice for ES.
Is the Yoko 200tw? I thought all the Miata guys loved the 195-15 Toyo (now available in 200tw).
As the owner of an SW20, I think the OP may find that the Dunlop is the ONLY performance-minded 14, but it's pretty short compared to the stock tire. MR2s run out of gear pretty early as is.
As for the Federal 595s--there are two different models of that tire. I checked a while back, and IIRC, I don't think the good one is the one available in the OP's size.
Hmm,so now the question becomes whether I go 15 inch and stay with the e stock plan or just go 17 inch and call it a day. Are there enough 15 inch options around that make decent street tires for the stock 15s? I like the Dunlop for price, the toyoR888 is super expensive.

Short answer - no. Usual problem at least for turbo people like me is finding rear tyres in the correct size.
I'm probably going to 17" before I have to replace the Rivals.
Tim, For 17 in ASA AR1 on tirerack come in the correct sizes and offset for not rolling the fenders, but is heavy. I may have to hunt down some g35 17 inch wheels.

Going to a narrower and higher a/r is not the way to go if you are looking for handling.

I just put new rear tires on my 93 MR2. The only non-competition 225/50-15 tire I was able to find is a Kumho somethingorother, and according to Discount Tire Direct it's been discontinued. Tirerack.com still shows some in stock, but I have no idea what I'll do the next time I need rear tires.

You have to get a little creative for SW20 tires. Tirerack has some good options, but you can't necessarily just shop their MR2 fitments.
I have 195/55 front and 205/55 rear Kumhos on my SW21 street wheels, works pretty well on 15x7 Avalon wheels. I also have 205/50 Bstone RE71r's that I run front and rear for autox, on 15x6 Millenia wheels in front and 15x7 Drag wheels on the rear.
I'm considering going to BFG Rival 1.5's so I can do a 205/50r15 front and 225/45r15 rear.
