I could see that (and ratchet straps) working well in a situation where it's too tight to get a normal spring compressor in. Would scare the E36 M3 out of me while doing it though...
A BFH. Using a smaller mallet just doesn't have the force behind it as a good sledge, and you're more likely to bugger up your axle instead of getting it out of the hub.

Caveat: E46 rear fender lips are the strongest known to man. 3 layers and lots of spot welds. I couldn't imagine doing it without the Eastwood roller. I had several hours of work spent contemplating how to improve on that design. Hydraulics and hardened steel came to mind.
