Well, I was getting ready to put a head gasket on my vvt engine and found this copper thing in the spark plug hole, I'm assuming this is some kind of crappy thread repair? A spark plug was threaded into it, it goes in and out smoothly. Used but low miles engine. Very annoying
Looks kinda like a busted spark plug.. but not really. Is it threaded in the hole, or just stuck?

There was a spark plug threaded into it with a battered tip. Spark plug smoothly threads in and out of said copper thing
Then that's some sort of repair insert. Looks like it's no quite right, though.
Is there a decent machine shop near you? A proper insert would be the correct depth of thread, and give a proper seat to tighten to.
That's concerning, i would get a kit to do it right or take it somewhere
Anyone have a clue on safe removal so I can see what's been done? A shame, the bottom end looks great and spins smooth. VVT heads are fairly cheap, I'm not sure how much it is to get it repaired at a machine shop. I'm not aware of one locally...
I feel like I'm not seeing the same thing... how can a spark plug thread into that?

I'm not seeing threads either if that's what you're getting at.

Even in real life I can't see the threads from this angle, but I've triple checked: it threads in smoothly and threads out smoothly. Looking at that cylinder it doesn't look like anything dramatic happened to the valves or piston. I doubt it was running as well with the lack of depth, etc.
That's an impressive Triton V8 impression
Leave it and run it. Looks like it has been.
