Cheapest i paid for was a 91 Dakota for $50, lots of free cars though. I've owned lots if cars but I'm a cheapskate and I think $40k for a new truck is the most.

I have gotten several cars for free. So, $0. I bought a CPO '97 M3 in 2000 for $26.5k and I think that is the top nut. I expect that to change shortly though as the mrs is due for a new car and she is spoiled by the 325XiT I got on one of the sweetest "Make an Offer" deals on ebay of all time. Since that is never going to happen again... I think I'm about to drop over $30k for it's replacement.

I'm glad this isn't a "How much did you spend on your race car" thread.

I've gotten pretty good at scoring cars for cheap. Most recently a running driving non modified completely straight with nice interior sohc 1991 eclipse 5spd for $350 dollars.

The owner thought it was a fuel pump making the car cut out on throttle. He installed a New distributor plugs wires fuel filter before he gave up. I popped the hood while it was running engine sounded fine I felt for a hole after the maf on the intake found one.

Advertised for 800 Offered 300 settled on 350. Towed home, 50cents worth of duct tape around the intake tube and the car ran fine. Hole in intake was bringing in unmetered air. Got lucky......this time. Car is a daily until it gets caged for lemons.

No one wants that type of pain. I think my crummy HPDE rat 1.6 Miata had $5500 in suspension and brakes, and that still had the 1.6 and open diff. Granted I was only about 5 secs off the pace of mid-pack SMs on 4 year old R888s and ~80whp

Best score (and cheap too) was a 92 BMW 318i, very early E36 (serial number 00131) from a coworker. One owner, just over 100k, AC broken in the summer in NC. Figured he would get nothing on trade so he asked if I wanted it for $500. I paid and then made a joke about the near empty gas tank in the $4/gal days. $475. An hour later he's in my office door and tells me the spare has a hole and he never got to fixing it. $450. Most I tried to pay was $30k, but it was for a Ferrari 348 so I figured that was ok. We reached an impasse at the time/miles for the engine out service (he said low miles, I said a lot of years) so we didn't close the deal.

I too have scored a couple of free cars including a D-Sports Racer, which I only spent 7k upgrading. I paid $125 for a solid running Pinto which I flipped two days later for $375, next cheapest was the Datsun I am racing now, paid $270 in 1985. Most expensive was the 2011 Subaru Outback I bought this past summer for 17K, I had budgeted up to 35K for a new to me car but in the end wanted money left over to buy more toys.........I would rather spend money on vintage MX bikes and little formula cars.

Couple of free cars from family.

In 1999 I bought a company work truck for $75 (the boss was kinda pissed).

Most was in '08 I bought a '05 Phaeton for $24,500. It had depreciated 66% in three years and 30K miles.

$0-4600.

I've only paid over 4k for a car 3 times (out of 50+) and all three times i got what i considered to be great deals.

I've paid 3-4k once that i can remember, 2-3k zero times, 1-2k probably close to 10, and 0-1k the other 35+.

No comment on the most expensive for myself, that's a bit of a out. One of my old cars, that I no longer owned, did sell in the 650K range a little while back though at auction though which but a bit hit on me as a sold it 12 years earlier for ~150K. This is more common then I would like to say but when you have as many as I have had it is bound to happen.

Cheapest was 100$ for a rolled FJ40 that I needed parts off of way back when they were worth nothing. Decided to pop the dents out, got the distributor fixed correctly and drove it for a few weeks till I could sell it.

Recently bought an 1995 Audi Cabriolet (was supposed to be daughters, but unbelievably it was a piece of E36 M3) and a quite crusty 1980 BMW 320i from original owner (was supposed to be my "fun" car; but, it too, was a piece of E36 M3) for $100 for both.

Most ever was a 1999 BMW 328i in 2002 for $22.5k-sport pkg full options (park distance control on a E46?) 5 speed manual-was a nice car; but a bad financial choice for sure. But working for BMW at the time, the "certified" warranty made A: me some commissions B: quite a nice car.

$25 for a rusted and busted up Turismo. Drove it to another location, put $125 on it and sold it in 2 or 3 days.

My current Jetta as the most expensive at 21k....

Never got a free car that ran, but I did drag home a few free Rabbits in my teens/early 20's. I think I laid down $250 for my first Rabbit Pickup.

Most expensive car that I've bought for myself would probably be my e21 at $3300 IIRC, but I traded it plus cash for a stupid Passat...

Most expensive car with my name on the title is our e46 Wagon at around $6800.

When I got my first job at 15, my neighbor gave me an old pedal-start moped so I wouldn't have to walk. It didn't always start though, and it really sucked to have to pedal that thing to work.

Cheapest car: 72 Super Beetle for $500

Most expensive: Skyactiv Mazda3 for $21,000
