A couple months ago looked at getting a Land Rover, jeep, off road thing but I, couldn't find anywhere semi locally where I coud go play with/ justify the existence of such a truck. So where do y'all go play off road? Special park, some ones land, your land? Doesn't have to be specifically rock crawling or mudding, even some good dirt roads would be cool by me. So where are all those lifted trucks going to play?
(though most around here just go to the mall)

No haha I was looking at starting an offroad project and just couldn't find anywhere where I could actually use it. I just want to know where people actually get to play with their trucks.

That all depends on where you live. I've got trails starting just a couple of miles from the house, and I can actually get to Moab via trails. Yup, spoiled.
When I lived in Ottawa, there was an area called "the pine forest" that was used for off-roading. I'd never heard of it until I got my Rover and met up with the local club. So chances are there are spots in your area that you don't know about. It's worth dropping in to the local Jeep club and asking them the same question.
I was thinking around the same area as Keith. When you look around, I'd bet you'll be surprised.
We have 10 acres I play on when I want to just blow off a little steam. There is a small poind on the property that has been ran through more than once. 
We also have several offroad parks within 1-3 hours drive that we go to on a semi regular basis and run either 4x4 trucks/Jeeps, ATVs, but more often than not I'm on my dirtbike. My favorite local park is Wheelin in the Country in Summertown TN.
Fire roads, logging roads, County or state ORV park?
I spend most of my time in the national forest on service roads. Luckily, SC has a lot of national forest. Most of it you don't need 4WD for. A lot of the less traveled roads, you do and I have found several camping spots that would be inaccessible without 4WD. There is also a road few miles from the house that is no longer maintained. It can be pretty challenging. I use it as my test track.
April, I am heading to the Uwharrie National Forest for a Suzuki meet up. They have trails from mild to wild. I'm looking forward to it.

There are also several ORV parks with in a couple of hours of me if you like that kind of thing. I bought a 4X4 to take me places. A park would kind of defeat the purpose.
Moab would be a blast. It's on the bucket list at this point. Maybe when the kids are all grown and out of the house. I would want to run those trails in the winter.
I like to go to rural towns and go to their town hall and grab one of the free maps. Then I try to check out all the roads in that town that are marked with dotted lines. It's not rock crawling but it's fun in a Jeep or on a motorcycle.

Definitely come out here. But keep in mind that a lot of the trails do take full advantage of the ridiculously high traction levels of slickrock, and you're not going to be able to run them (or even follow them!) if there's snow. So if you have trails like Hells Revenge on your bucket list, spring or fall might be a safer bet than January.

I didn't think about that. Snow + Desert, seems like it would never go together. I just don't want to deal with 100+ degree temps.

everything local is private property- someones private hunting ground or under water 6 months a year, so therefore we travel 2 1/2 hours one way across state line into Indiana to the Badlands Park. privately owned several hundred acres of off road fun. anything that's 4 wheel drive is allowed....we run junk. Suzuki Sidekicks-Cherokees-Blazer whatever s cheap on Craigslist. some make 1 trip others return for more fun, best time EVER ! post pics later
Any jungle trail is fair game here...most unused land is unless there's a "private property" sign. The trails between most crop fields are legally fair game but practically not so much, sometimes people clip a plant and the farmers get mighty pissed. We don't want to get on their bad side when it comes time to choose the route for an offroad TSD.

I know some places are terrible. IIRC the only place you can go offroading legally in the province of Ontario, apart from private land where you have permission, is some park way up north.

Powerline service trails are a favorite.
National Forest logging roads. Some are nice gravel roads that get snowplowed, others are two tire tracks that seemingly narrow the farther you drive in to the woods. I've found you dont always need to seek out the extremes of your vehicle's capabilities to have a good time sight seeing.

Damn you, state of South Carolina, for specifically prohibiting trespass on powerline right of ways. We can't touch them. I have heard it's worth a $200 fine. 
I just went wheeling with a friend near dawsonville Georgia on what is legally a county road. Out of 7 jeeps only 2 made it through all the way without getting stuck somewhere or taking a bypass. Darnedest thing I ever saw. Came home and searched craigslist for my own vehicle that night. Darn fun!

There is a road about 5 miles from my house that is like that. As you travel down it, you come across a sign that sais, "End State Maintenance." About a mile farther there is another sigh that reads, "End County Maintenance." From there on you might as well be in a jungle in South America. I can't make it from one end to the other without using at least one bypass because the Samurai won't float.

I did off road for a few years, joined a local club to learn how safely plus they have all the goods on where to go. It's safer NOT wheeling alone out there.

Every spring they have a 4X4 101 to blow the dust off your skills and show newbs how to winch safely and proper lines to keep from flipping off the edge into a ravine.

Sadly, there isn't a whole lot of place to wheel in the Tampa area. If I wasn't at work all the damn time, I'd have more time to wheel. I feel like I am neglecting her by just driving her to work everyday.
I eventually got some real tires and a small lift (33x12.5x15s and about 2.5" lift"). Most current pic; she's way too clean haha:
