A mile or two east then south should find you some sand to play in. Don't know if there is anything just to the west around the Great Dismal Swamp. Otherwise, a couple hours drive west should put you in good country.

Off-roading in little Suzukis in the islands reminds me of this shot:
In Aruba in a rental. My buddy jumped off the crest of this hill and had the thing a foot in the air when I grabbed the shot. (I Photoshopped it to match the story he told about the adventure.)
