I bought a dwarf car last week to use mostly for autox. They have recently been classed in fmodified. In solo you are allowed and differential, but if still must be a solid axle. Currently the car has a Toyota 8 bolt rear end with welded spider gears. I think I want a good LSD, but there's nothing I can find for the car. It also needs one new axle, so I don't mind switching to something else. Here are the criteria in order of importance:
-
Available limited slip differential (probably a decent clutch type for autox)
-
Weight. I don't want some huge Dana infinity. does anything come with an aluminum carrier?
-
Price. I paid $2k for the whole car. I know I may double the price by adding a decent diff/axle, but I'd rather not if possible
-
Axle shaft availability. I will need them shortened, the rear axle has the pumpkin way off to one side
-
Multiple rear end ratios available. I can play with tire size to a point.
How narrow and light do you need? I'd look at the Ford 8.8 from a Ranger, or the Ford 7.5 from the same. They both had offset center-sections so you can use two of the short-side axles and cut down the long-side axle tube to narrow the whole thing. They were commonly available with clutch-type LSDs and came in a really wide range of gear ratios. You can probably find these in any junkyard in the country, I've purchased complete 8.8 rear ends for as little as $40.

HUM.....
You could swap in a toyota 10 bolt ("T code on vin plate) but the LSD's are not cheap but at least they are out there. Look in corola AE86's but most drift guys swipe'm before i gat to'em.
Dwarf car products makes his own unit sells for $7-800 range
you'll have to shorten the drive shaft about 2 inches or lenghten the radius rods.

Some Alfas had aluminum carriers as I recall...
Miata Torsen/lsd in an RX-7 3rd member?
a lot of the jeep grand cherokees, v8s mostly i believe, had dana 44a's, 'a' for aluminum center. ought to be pretty cheap and plentiful, and i bet theyre out there with LSDs too but ive never looked into that.

For smaller axles, I like to look at the some what dated material at The Ranger Station. I would be looking at the 8.8 too, but there are smaller Danas than the Infinity series

I have to see how much an 8.8 weighs. My Toyota weighs 66lbs with the diff, snout, and axle housings, but no axles.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for your question, but where did you find the car for 2K? Was it a roller?

Dwarfs are light - an 8.8 or even a d44 are kinda hefty. You can find dana 35s all over - there were some factory LSDs or easy to find aftermarket.

It is rough, but came with an 03 r1 engine. I messaged the guy about it when it was $4k. He kept emailing me dropping the price. Eventually I showed up with $2k and he took it.
I had it out at a lapping day yesterday. It was tons of fun, but sure didn't like to go straight. 44, I couldn't find dwarf car products web page. Any link? I will also look into te Dana 35,44 and 8.8
Do you need an LSD or would a spool work for your purposes?
If you have the rear end I think you do, you can get a spool for $150 (or $170 if you want aluminum) from here
there ARE plenty of LSDs available for the 6.7" Toyota ring and pinion.
The cheapest is to find an OEM LSD and fit that.
There are some very... VERY... VERY trick clutch types out there.... Cusco has 2 types($800-$1000)... and OS Giken($1400) has one as well. You can also get the OBX torsen to fit the Toyota 6.7" assembly.

In reply to oldeskewltoy:
Yeah. I think I may end up going with the 6.7 (10 bolt Toyota) and springing for the o$ giken.
Mike if it wouldn't go straight I'd be looking to see whats bent, misaligned etc and for sure check the wheelbase side to side as the left side was likely shorter for the ovals. The welded diff should go straight, its the turning bit they usually mess up.
I think I have straight but bare 6.7 housing if that helps you in any way.I sold my 2 way kazz and I think my spare pumpkin and axles ended up in the ice race corolla I also sold so no spare bits other than the housing.
The 6.7's have a reputation for weakness but with a solid pinion spacer from Weir tech or T3 I think and the lightness of the dwarf you'll be able to beat on it without worry.
Most of the later Volvo 740 Turbo's had a nice Dana LSD.

It was definitely misaligned. All I did was take out most if the positive camber from the front left tire. It had a fair bit of toe out. I lost the one tie rod bolt on the first lap which made it pretty exciting.

That Volvo option looks like it might be good.

I'd stay with a T code 10 bolt as theres plenty of stock ratios avalible and if you find a legends dealer near you theres some aftermarket gear set availible.
Plus if you deside to sell it down the road it's still useable as a dwarf.
You'll need to square up the chasis and remove any stagger in the tire too.
hate that you found a cheap dwarf car. i always keep my eyes open for em but they never surface.
Good buy.
some of the 1st fen RX7 (gsl-se?) had LSD + discs. Pretty light too from what I remember.

All GSLs and GSL-SEs had limited slips. Gears were slightly different...3.91 vs 4.11 as I recall. The SE had a 4x4.25" bolt circle and had bigger brakes, the 12A cars were 4x110mm.
Mike to pick gearing go to gearingcommander.com and you can load the R1 engine in and then pick differing tire sizes(it accepts the usual car based sizes along with bike sizes).Works with sprockets but I think you can load it with the ring/pinion gear counts to come up with the same thing.Your going to want tall'ish gears(for a car) to work with the short tires/final drive of the bike trans to get much over 100mph.
