car is a 99 camry
so i have to buy new tires. currently running the stock 14 inch steelies with 195/70/14.
have a bent wheel, and lucked into a set of 16X6.5 steelies off a gen5 camry. tried the wheels while doing the brakes today. fit perfect.
so now im down to tire size. im looking to stuff the biggest rubber i can, as i ocassionally autocross this when my toy is down (more often than not lately. dang old mopars)
i was looking at 225/55/16's. probably going to run the same tire that i run on my toy, the federal 595 super steels. i know them from my other car, so ill have no suprises.
so, will they fit? thy are 1 inch greater in diameter (.5 on either side. should clear the strut). LOTS wider. im concerned about them rubbing my strut housing with the sidewall. ive got about 1 inch between the outermost part of the wheel lip and strut.
thanks
michael
I ran 215/55/16's on my 98 Camry with no issues. The wheels were about 35mm offset though. You own wheels would be much higher.
225/55/16 is a pretty tall tire. Id rather go for something in the 225/50 range, but i can say from personal experience trying to run a 225/50 on a 6.0" wide rim, it ruined the handling. Will it be that bad on a 6.5? Not AS bad, but probably not great.
so, honestly.. id recommend a 205/55r16. It'll fit your rim width and handle decent without being super floppy or super tall.
