Have a friend with a 1983 RX7 and an open diff. He wants to know whether my Torsen setup (pumpkin, axles, driveshaft) can be fabbed up to fit his car. From what I've gathered, the '84-'85 RX7's do this swap, but the '83 has a larger flange?

Wait, are you just trying to swap the diff, or the whole rear suspension? I was with you until you mentioned "pumpkin, axles." The rear suspension shares nothing between the cars besides the diff itself; (edit) it looks like a 1.8 Miata diff will go in an 84-85 RX-7 "big axle", but the "small axle" 83-earlier cars have smaller side gears...likewise 1.6 Miata bits have no RX-7 interchange.

Torsen means 1.8 diff.

Not directly, no. '83 has the small axles. '84-85 has the large axles, which are the same size as a 1.8 Miata.

So you would need to find an '84-85 rearend first, then put the diff into that.

I have a lot of '84-85 disk housings but they are all kinda... pretzeled.

That is a small bearing housing from an '81-83, not a big bearing housing from '84-85. It is not what you need.

The immediate identifier is the bolt pattern on the end. The triangle for the retainer goes "against" the caliper mount holes for the small bearing housings and "with" the caliper holes on the big bearing housing.
